A Crystal Palace fan has been banned from football for three years after making a racist gesture toward Korean midfielder Son Heung-min during a Premier League match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London in May last year.

지난해 5월 북런던에 위치한 토트넘 홋스퍼 스타디움에서 열린 프리미어리그 경기 중 한국 미드필더 손흥민에게 인종차별적 제스처를 취한 크리스탈 팰리스 팬이 3년간 축구장 출입 금지를 당했다.

The fan, which Britain's Daily Mirror identified as a 44-year old male, was clearly visible in footage of the game between Tottenham and Crystal Palace in the away end making a racist gesture aimed at Son, who appears to see it while walking toward the touchline.

영국 매체 데일리 미러가 44세 남성이라고 신원을 확인한 해당 팬은 토트넘과 크리스탈 팰리스와의 경기 영상에 똑똑히 잡혔다. 그는 손흥민을 겨냥하여 인종차별적 제스처를 취했고 손흥민은 이를 터치라인 쪽으로 걸어 나가며 본 것으로 보인다.

The footage quickly spread online, causing widespread condemnation from fans.

He was initially given a fine and required to do community service earlier this year, but prosecutors filed for an additional ban on attending any games for the next three years.

해당 팬은 올해 초에 먼저 벌금 및 사회봉사 징계를 받았으나 검사는 그를 3년 동안 모든 (축구) 경기 출입을 금지해 달라고 추가로 요청했다.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the three-year ban and also warned that it will not tolerate any discriminatory behavior in football, saying that it has a “massive impact” on the game, players and fans.

Racism is a chronic problem in the Premier League and in football across Europe. Son was the target of abuse a number of times last year, including when West Ham fans called Son a “dog eating [expletive]” on social media during a game in February.

In 2021, a Chelsea fan was caught on camera making a racist gesture at Son, two weeks after Wolverhampton Wanderers complained to UEFA due to racism aimed at Hwang Hee-chan during a friendly in Portugal.
