Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min topped the ranking on Gallup Korea’s annual poll of the biggest names in Korean sport, with Paris SaintGermain’s Lee Kang-in taking second and a big chunk of Son’s annual vote.

토트넘 홋스퍼 주장 손흥민이 매년 한국갤럽이 실시하는 국내 최고 유명 스포츠인 여론조사에서 1위를 차지했다. 파리 생제르맹의 이강인은 손흥민의 표를 많이 가져가며 2위에 올랐다.

Son topped the “Person who shined the most in Korean sports” poll with 73.8 percent of the vote, holding on to first place for a seventh consecutive year, but with less dominance than last year’s 86.2 percent. The re-coronation comes as little surprise, with the captain of both club and country remaining the most successful Asian footballer ever to play in the Premier League and one of the top-rated midfielders in the world today.

손흥민은 “한국 스포츠계에서 가장 빛난 이들” 여론조사에서 73.8%의 득표율을 기록하며 7년 연속 1위를 유지했다. 그러나 작년 86.2%에 비하면 다소 우세가 꺾인 수치였다. 토트넘과 국가대표팀에서 주장을 맡고 있는 그가 올해 또다시 1위를 차지한 것은 영국 프리미어리그에서 가장 성공한 아시아 축구 선수로 남아있고 전 세계 최고 수준 미드필더 중 한 명으로 뛰고 있기에 매우 놀랄 일은 아니다.

Lee, who was ranked at No. 4 last year, finished second with 27.7 percent of the vote, far more than 2022 runner-up Kim Yeon-koung’s 9.9 percent.

Lee, 22, has been a fan-favorite in Korea since he was just 10 years old, but has seen his profile shoot up this year after joining football royalty at French club PSG. Now playing alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Lee has gone from child prodigy and rising star to an established figure in both European football and on the Korean national team.

올해 22세 이강인은 10세 때부터 한국 팬들이 가장 사랑하는 선수였다. 그의 인기는 프랑스 명문 구단 PSG로 이적한 후 치솟았다. 현재 킬리안 음바페 등과 같은 선수들과 활약하는 그는 영재 선수에서 유럽 축구계와 국가대표팀에서 떠오르는 스타로 자리매김했다.

Footballers dominated in general this year, taking the top four spots on the ranking for the first time since the poll began in 2007. Following Son and Lee, Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae finished third with 8.1 percent of the vote, followed by Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Hwang Hee-chan with 4.8 percent.

Badminton player An Se-young, who this year became the first ever Korean to become women’s singles world champion and the first Korean in 29 years to win the women’s singles title at the Asian Games, finished in fifth place with 4.1 percent of the vote.

배드민턴 선수 안세영은 올해 한국 선수 최초로 세계선수권대회에서 여자 단식 우승을 하고 아시안 게임에서 29년 만에 여자 단식 금메달을 획득했으며 여론조사에서 4.1%로 5위에 올랐다.

Rounding out the top 10 were Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin, who has not actually played at all this year while recovering from injury, volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung, table tennis player Shin Yu-bin, San Diego Padres utility man Kim Ha-seong and high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok.

나머지 Top 10 순위에 오른 선수로는 토론토 블루제이스 투수 류현진이 있다. 그는 올해 부상 회복으로 인해 전혀 경기를 뛰지 못했음에도 순위에 올랐다. 배구 스타 김연경, 탁구 선수 신유빈, 샌디에이고 파드리스 유틸리티 플레이어 김하성 및 육상 높이뛰기 선수 우상혁도 순위에 올랐다.

Gallup Korea polled 1,769 people over the age of 13 across Korea (excluding Jeju) between Nov. 2 and Dec. 4. Participants were asked to name the two Korean athletes that they felt had shone the most in 2023 without being provided with a list of options.
