The rare najeon chilgi box dating back to the renaissance of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), which made a dramatic homecoming from Japan in July, is finally ready to greet members of the public. A special exhibit showcasing the box kicked off at the National Palace Museum of Korea in central Seoul on Thursday and will continue until Jan. 7.

지난 7월 일본에서 극적으로 환수한 고려시대 최고 수준의 나전칠기가 마침내 일반인들에게 공개됐다. 환수된 나전칠기를 선보이는 특별전이 국립고궁박물관에서 지난 목요일 시작되었고 전시는 내년 1월 7일까지다.

Najeon chilgi is a traditional Korean technique in which lacquerware is inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

나전칠기는 칠그릇에 자개를 상감하는 한국의 전통 기법이다.

Researchers have been conducting various scientific analyses since the relic was brought back from Japan. The returned najeon chilgi box is especially valuable, according to the Cultural Heritage Administration, as it has gone through hardly any repairs compared to other lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, which are prone to damage. Fewer than 20 najeon chilgi from the Goryeo Dynasty are known to have survived across the world.

일본에서 환수해 온 이후 다방면의 과학적 분석을 진행하였다. 문화재청은 이번 환수된 나전칠기는 망가지기 쉬운 특성을 가진 나전칠기의 특성을 고려할 때 다른 나전칠기에 비해 수리 흔적이 거의 없어 특히 귀한 유물이라고 설명했다. 전 세계적으로 파악된 고려 나전칠기의 개수는 약 20개로 알려져 있다.

The returned najeon chilgi measures 33 centimeters (13 inches) wide, 18.5 centimeters long and 19.4 centimeters tall. It has patterns made from mother-of-pearl, mainly shells of certain mollusks. It is adorned with representative Goryeo motherof-pearl patterns, including chrysanthemum vine motifs and peony vine designs.

이번 환수된 나전칠기는 가로 33cm, 세로 18.5cm, 높이 19.4cm 정도의 상자다. 고려시대 대표적인 문양인 국화넝쿨무늬와 모란 넝쿨무늬에 자개를 활용해 장식했다.

Visitors will be able to view the najeon chilgi at the exhibit along with X-ray photographs and 3-D scans. Choi Eong-chon, head of the Cultural Heritage Administration, who specialized in najeon chilgi while working at the National Museum of Korea, will also hold a talk session about the returned artifact in January. The exact date will be announced shortly.

최은천 문화재청장에 따르면 이번 전시에는 나전칠기의 실물과 함깨 유물을 다각도에서 촬영한 3D 스캔 자료, 엑스선 촬영 자료 등이 함께 공개된다. 최 청장은 국립중앙박물관에서 근무하던 시절 나전칠기를 전문적으로 연구했던 경험이 있다. 이를 바탕으로 전시 기간 중 나전칠기에 대해 특별 강연도 한차례 마련되었다. 정확한 날짜는 추후에 공개될 예정이다.
