Korean food company Paldo is exporting its Birak Sikhye, a product based on the traditional Korean sweet rice beverage, to Indonesia, having obtained halal certification.

Paldo announced Tuesday that Birak Sikhye (238 milileters or eight fluid ounces) and Paldo Birak Sikhye without rice (175 milileters) will soon be available in supermarket chains in Indonesia, including Lion Super Indo, The Foodhall, Aeon and GrandLucky Superstore, with plans for expanding distribution channels.

Sikhye, a well-loved Korean dessert beverage, is typically made by pouring malt water onto cooked rice. Paldo launched it under the brand name Birak Sikhye in 1993. It has since sold more than 2 billion products.

Paldo obtained halal certification from the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) for five of its beverage products last year, including its sikhye products, ensuring adherence to Islamic Shariah law during its production process to guarantee permissibility for consumption by Muslims.

“Birak Sikhye is crafted using domestically sourced malt water and non-glutinous rice through an 11-hour manufacturing process,” the company said.

“We plan to expand our portfolio of halal-certified items for additional export-only products and ramyeon brands to explore the global halal market,” stated Paldo, which is known for popular ramyeon products such as Paldo Dosirac and Bibim Men.
