S-Oil has obtained a green certificate of approval for its production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) initiative in a first for Korean refiners.

This means that the company will be the first refiner in the country to be able to domestically produce and sell sustainable aviation fuels that are licensed with the ISCC Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (Corsia), the official title of the certification.

The company projects that the demand for sustainable aviation fuel will rise as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) under the UN will make it mandatory for all airlines to be certified with ISCC Corsia from 2027.

"As S-Oil acquired the international certification to produce SAF that meets Corsia requirements for the first time in Korea, it can contribute substantially to protecting land through the use of bio-based raw materials and conserving biodiversity, not to mention cutting greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector," said S-Oil’s Ryu Yul, president for corporate strategy and services, in a statement. “The latest certification is the first step toward S-Oil's pivot to a clean energy supplier to achieve sustainable growth."

S-Oil also received ISCC certification in two additional fields — ISCC EU, which certifies the production of low-carbon fuel products in line with the EU’s renewable energy directive, and ISCC Plus, a voluntary certification for the use of sustainable biomass and circular resources.
