North Korea’s spy satellite launch ends in failure after midair explosion

North Korea said early Tuesday that an attempt to launch its latest spy satellite late Monday ended in failure after the first-stage rocket exploded midair.

북한은 화요일 (5월 28일) 오전 전날 밤 늦게 군사정찰위성 발사 시도에서 신형 로켓 1단이 비행 중 공중에서 폭발해 실패로 끝났다고 밝혔다.

The rocket carrying its satellite, Malligyong-1, exploded during the first-stage flight Monday night shortly after takeoff from the Sohae launching station on its west coast, reported the North's staterun Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

북한 관영 매체인 조선중앙통신은 서해위성발사장에서 정찰위성 ‘만리경-1호’를 신형위성운반로켓에 탑재해 발사한 뒤 몇 분만인 1단 비행 중 공중 폭발했다고 보도했다.

The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said a projectile was launched in a southward direction over the Yellow Sea from the North's northwestern Tongchang-ri area at about 10:44 p.m. Monday. It said that around 10:46 p.m., many pieces of debris were found in the country's waters.

합동참모본부은 월요일 오후 10시44분경 북한이 동창리 일대에서 서해 남쪽방향으로 발사체를 발사했고, 오후 10시46분경 북한 측 해상에서 다수의 파편을 탐지했다고 밝혔다.

On the same day, South Korea’s Air Force conducted aerial drills involving 20 fighter jets, including F-35As, near the inter-Korean border to demonstrate its resolve to punish any enemy provocation in response to the North's launch plans.

공군은 이날 F-35A 등 전투기 약20여 대를 동원해 비행금지선 이남에서 비행훈련을 실시했다. 이번 훈련은 적 도발 시 강력한 응징 의지를 보여주기 위한 것이다.

Participants at the meeting, led by National Security Adviser Chang Ho-jin, said North Korea's latest launch of a military spy satellite, which comes despite repeated warnings from the South Korean government and the international community, “is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions regardless of whether it is successful or not.”

장호진 국가안보실장 주재 안보상황점검회의 참석자들은 한국 정부와 국제사회의 거듭된 경고에도 불구하고 북한이 또다시 군사정찰위성을 발사한 것은 “성공 여부와 관계 없이 유엔 안보리 결의 위반”이라고 규탄했다.
