HBO's 'The Idol' featuring Blackpink's Jennie earns Emmy nomination

HBO TV series "The Idol" (2023), featuring Blackpink member Jennie's acting debut, has been nominated for an Emmy Award.

"The Idol" was nominated in the "Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming 2024" category for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, as announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Wednesday. The show's choreographer, Nina McNeely, is credited as the nominee.

Directed by Sam Levinson and produced by singer The Weeknd, legal name Abel Tesfaye, "The Idol" is set in the music industry of Los Angeles, portraying the relationship between pop idol Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, and nightclub owner Tedros, played by Abel Tesfaye.

Jennie plays Dyanne, a backup dancer and close friend of Jocelyn.

“I didn’t have a lot of time to learn the choreo for the dance scenes,” said Jennie in an interview with Max, the streaming service of U.S. cable network HBO. “Thankfully, I do this all the time, so it came naturally to me.”

"The Idol" came under fire when it was released in June 2023, with some calling out the series for its alleged chauvinism and misogyny due to its sexual content. Jennie's scene — where she is dancing to the song "World Class Sinner/I’m a Freak" (2023) — was brought under scrutiny for its sexual nature, with some arguing that it resembles sexual acts.
