President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday underscored plans to increase national pension premiums while recognizing the need to gain youth trust to secure a sustainable income scheme for Korea's aging population.

윤석열 대통령은 목요일(8월 29일) 연금 보험료 인상 계획을 강조하며 노령화 인구의 지속 가능한 노후 소득 구조를 위해 청년 세대의 신뢰가 필요하다고 강조했다.

"We must stipulate in law that the government guarantees the payment of national pensions," Yoon said in a press briefing at the Yongsan presidential office in Seoul, as a means to "instill confidence in young people" that they too will be able to receive stipends in their old age.

윤 대통령은 서울 용산 대통령실에서 열린 기자회견에서 "국가가 국민연금 지급을 보장한다는 것을 법률에 명문화해야 한다"며 그래야 청년들에게 '우리도 받을 수 있다'는 확신을 심어줄 수 있다"고 말했다.

From his office, Yoon gave a 40-minute live-broadcast briefing on state affairs covering four key areas of reform: national pension, health care, education and labor, along with the low birthrate issue. He later took impromptu questions from journalists at the presidential briefing room, covering the themes of reform measures, politics, foreign affairs, economy and social affairs in an 85-minute press conference with local and foreign media.

윤 대통령은 40분 동안 생중계된 국정브리핑에서 연금•의료•교육•노동의 4대 개혁과 저출생 문제에 대해 설명했다. 이어 85분 간 대통령실 브리핑룸에서 열린 기자회견에서 개혁, 정치, 외교, 경제, 사회 등을 주제로 국내외 취재진의 현장 질문을 받았다.

Regarding national pension reform, Yoon delineated "a need to differentiate the pace of increase in pension premiums between the younger and middle-aged generations." He said he plans to push for pension reform acceptable to young people, who will bear the burden of paying the highest premiums for the longest period and be the last to receive pensions.

연금 개혁 관련 윤 대통령은 "청년 세대와 중장년 세대의 연금 보험료 인상 속도를 차등화할 필요가 있다"고 강조했다. 윤 대통령은 가장 오래, 가장 많은 보험료를 내고, 연금은 가장 늦게 받는 부담을 지닌 청년 세대가 수긍할 수 있는 연금 개혁을 추진하겠다고 말했다.

Yoon called for pension reform to follow three principles: sustainability, intergenerational fairness and guaranteed retirement income.

윤 대통령은 연금 개혁의 3대 원칙으로 지속 가능성, 세대 간 공정성, 노후 소득 보장 등을 제시했다.

According to the state-run National Pension Service (NPS), the national pension fund's coffers are expected to run dry by 2055 under the current scheme.

국민연금공단에 따르면 연금을 현행 제도대로 운영하면 2055년 기금이 고갈될 것으로 예상된다.

Yoon skirted more challenging questions during the press conference, such as the investigation into first lady Kim Keon Hee's receiving of a luxury handbag from a pastor in 2022.

기자회견에서 윤 대통령은 지난 2022년 김건희 여사가 목사로부터 명품 핸드백을 받은 사건 관련 조사 등 곤란한 질문에 대한 답변은 피했다.

"It's not appropriate for me to comment," he said when asked by a reporter about public criticism that the prosecution investigating was not in line with people's expectations. He noted that he has refrained from commenting on such investigations as president, and in this case, it was also a "family-related" matter.

기자가 김 여사 검찰 조사가 국민의 기대에 부응하지 못했다는 지적에 대해 묻자 윤 대통령은 "내가 언급하는 것은 적절하지 않다"고 답했다. 그는 대통령으로서 이런 조사에 대해 언급하는 것을 자제해 왔으며 이 경우 "가족 관련이기도 해" 더욱 언급하지 않겠다고 강조했다.

However, he indirectly refuted public criticism of the prosecution's conducting of a private investigation of the first lady by citing his experience as a prosecutor visiting a former president's wife at her private residence to investigate her.

다만 검찰이 김 여사를 비공개로 조사한 것에 대한 비판 여론과 관련, 자신도 전직 대통령 부인을 사저로 찾아가 조사한 적이 있다는 검사 시절 경험담을 들며 우회적으로 반박했다.
