The Czech government is confident that the new nuclear deal with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) will go through despite appeals from U.S. company Westinghouse Electric and French company EDF, the country's top security adviser said in an interview in Seoul.

한국수력원자력(한수원)과 체코의 신규 원전 건설 계약에 대해 미국 원전 기업 웨스팅하우스와 프랑스 전력공사(EDF)가 이의를 제기하고 있지만 체코 정부는 사업이 성공적으로 진행될 것으로 확신한다고 한국을 방문 중인 체코 국가안보보좌관이 밝혔다.

Tomáš Pojar, the national security adviser of the Czech government, also envisioned that Korea and the Czech Republic will have even more opportunities for cooperation with the new nuclear deal, which he said will have a "snowball effect."

토마쉬 포야르 체코 국가안보보좌관은 또 새 원자력 발전소 사업 계약으로 한국과 체코가 협력할 수 있는 기회가 더 많아질 것이라고 내다보며, ‘눈덩이 효과’를 기대했다.

“The nuclear project is really going to start a snowball effect not only in the nuclear field but in other fields as well,” said Pojar during an exclusive interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Jung District, central Seoul, on Tuesday. Pojar is visiting Seoul as a special envoy to meet with President Yoon Suk Yeol, ministers of the Korean government and business leaders after Korea's selection as the preferred bidder of the $18 billion nuclear deal and ahead of Yoon’s upcoming visit to Prague.

포야르 보좌관은 화요일(9월 3일) 서울 중구 주한 체코 대사관에서 코리아중앙데일리와 단독 인터뷰에서 “원전 사업은 원자력뿐만 아니라 다른 분야에서도 눈덩이 효과를 일으킬 것”이라고 말했다. 한국이 180억 달러 규모의 체코 원전 사업 우선협상대상자로 선정되면서 포야르 보좌관은 윤석열 대통령의 프라하 방문에 앞서 윤 대통령과 정부 관계자들, 재계 인사들을 만나기 위해 총리 특사 자격으로 서울을 찾았다.

"We should take their appeals seriously and respond accordingly, but we are confident we can move ahead and negotiate the agreement with the Korean side," he said, regarding the appeals from the U.S. and French companies. “We are also confident that the whole process was transparent and within related rules. There is also a dispute with Westinghouse about the IP [of some of the technology involved], but we are not part of that dispute. However, I am sure that this dispute can be bridged, and we hope that the two companies can come to an agreement.”

그는 미국과 프랑스 기업의 항의에 대해 “이의 제기를 진지하게 받아들여야 하고 절차에 따라 대응해야 하지만, 우리는 한국 측과의 협상을 진행할 수 있다고 확신한다”고 말했다. 그는 “또 전체 (선정) 과정은 투명했고 관련 규정을 지켰다고 자신한다”며 “(관련된 일부 기술) IP와 관련해 웨스팅하우스와 분쟁이 있는데, 우리는 그 분쟁의 당사자는 아니다”고 덧붙였다. 이어 “그럼에도 이번 분쟁을 잘 봉합할 수 있다고 믿고, 두 회사가 합의에 이르길 바란다”고 말했다.

During his meeting with Yoon on Wednesday, Pojar said that the Czech government hopes to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with Korea not only in the nuclear power sector but also in industry, investment, defense, transportation, and research and development.

수요일 윤 대통령과 만난 자리에서 포야르 보좌관은 체코 정부는 원자력 분야뿐만 아니라 산업•투자•방산•교통•연구개발 등에 걸쳐 한국과 전면적 협력을 강화하기를 희망한다고 전달했다.

With the Korea JoongAng Daily, Pojar outlined various sectors where further cooperation could be achieved, what outcomes are to be expected from Yoon’s state visit and reasons why European powers should engage in the Indo-Pacific. Pojar has been the Czech government's national security adviser since last year. He was previously the prime minister's sherpa for EU matters and deputy minister for European affairs.

포야르 보좌관은 인터뷰에서 향후 확대할 수 있는 다양한 협력 분야, 윤 대통령의 체코 방문에서 기대할 수 있는 성과, 유럽이 인도•태평양 지역에 관심을 둬야 하는 이유 등에 대해 밝혔다. 포야르 보좌관은 지난해 체코 국가안보보좌관에 임명됐다. 이에 앞서 총리실 EU 담당 보좌관, 유럽관계부 차관 등을 역임했다.
