NewJeans’ 'Super Shy' boldly strides into Pitchfork’s top 100 songs of the 2020s so far

Girl group NewJeans' song “Super Shy” (2023) was ranked No. 13 on U.S. music publication Pitchfork's list of the 100 best songs of the 2020s so far, as the only K-pop song featured.
 
"The 100 Best Songs of the 2020s So Far" list was released on Sept. 30. Lana Del Rey's “A&W” (2023) claimed the top spot, followed by RXK Nephew's "American tterroristt” (2020) and then Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us” (2024).

Pitchfork described "Super Shy" as "their most effortless masterstroke: The drum ’n’ bass and Jersey club production doesn’t pop so much as drift, providing a breezy foundation for a wistful hook."  
 
"Super Shy" peaked at No. 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and No. 63 on the British Official Chart Top 100 in August 2023. It recorded 600 million streams on Spotify as of Sept. 1.
 
“Get Up,” the group's second EP which features "Super Shy," received a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork in July 2023. This is the second-highest score the U.S. music publication has given to a K-pop album, following “Seo Taiji and Boys 1” (1992), the debut album of the trailblazing K-pop boy band Seo Taiji and Boys.
 
Since its debut in 2022, NewJeans has rapidly ascended to stardom, winning multiple rookie awards at the Golden Disc Awards (2023), Melon Music Awards (2023) and Seoul Music Awards (2023). Recently, it showcased its global appeal with a sold-out concert at Tokyo Dome, just two years after its debut.
 
On Monday, group member Hanni was called to testify at the National Assembly for an audit by the Environment and Labor Committee regarding workplace bullying allegations against HYBE. 
 
The group's leader, Minji, will throw the ceremonial first pitch for KBO team Doosan Bears on Wednesday.
