Panic erupts after 2-meter-long rat snake slithers into downtown Uijeongbu

A two-meter-long (6.56 feet-long) rat snake appeared on a road in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, causing panic.
According to the fire department on Wednesday, a 119 emergency report was received at 11:55 a.m., stating that "a two-meter-long snake appeared" on the road in front of the northern office of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government.
The dispatched fire department personnel confirmed that the animal was a rat snake and proceeded to capture it and drop it off on a mountain.
The department estimated that the rat snake came down to the road from a nearby mountain.
A two-meter-long snake was also found on a sidewalk in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, on Oct. 8.
According to Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters, there have been 6,675 counts of snake sightings in northern Gyeonggi from 2020 to June 2023.
The sightings have steadily increased, with 1,217 counts in 2020 to 2001 in 2023. The cases were also concentrated in the third semester of the year.
