Prosecutors seek four-year sentence for footballer Hwang Ui-jo over illegal sex videos

Prosecutors have sought a four-year prison sentence for footballer Hwang Ui-jo on charges of filming sexual encounters with his partners without their consent.

The prosecution requested the sentence for Hwang, 32, for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes during the first trial held Wednesday at the Seoul Central District Court.

Hwang, who currently plays for Turkish team Alanyaspor, was charged with filming his sexual encounters with two partners four times, between June and September 2022, without their consent. The illicit content was shared by Hwang’s sister-in-law, Lee, 33, on Instagram in June last year.

Hwang later filed a complaint against Lee, but police investigations revealed that the videos had been filmed illegally.

In September, Lee was sentenced to three years in prison by the Supreme Court.

Hwang’s lawyer said the footballer admitted to all charges during Wednesday’s trial.

“One of the victims has refused negotiations and called for a heavy sentence,” said the prosecution. “Hwang may have admitted the charges now, but his previous denials cast doubt on whether he is genuinely remorseful.”
