Tourists Abroad Number 300,000 A Month
The number of tourists traveling abroad recovered to levels comparable to the pre-IMF bailout days, breaking the 300,000 mark per month. The number of tourists abroad reached its peak in July 1997, recording 499,000. It plunged to 214,900 in December 1997 and decreased further to 197,600 last February.However, 214,600 people departed the country in March and continued to increase before reaching 304,000 in August. Travel expenditures also rose from 108.6 million dollars in December 1997 to 389.1 million dollars in July, 1998, before settling at 313.7 million dollars in August. The highest recorded overseas spending by tourists was 796.1 million dollars in July 1997.
