Idling Cars Waste 370 Billion Won a Year

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) announced on November 17 that electronic-controlled cars do not need to idle before driving because the engine coolant's temperature rises to 20 degrees immediately after ignition.
However, when the temperature falls to seven degrees below zero celsius, two and five minutes idling is necessary for gasoline and diesel engines, respectively.
The MOE estimated that drivers waste 374 billion won a year through unnecessary idling. If a car idles for five minutes daily for 300 days, 6,135 tons of pollutant, which is 0.3% of the total pollution caused by cars, will be produced.
If a car idles for 10 minutes a day, 3.5 km worth of travel in gasoline and 1.5 km for diesel powered cars will be wasted as well as 4.2 g and 12 g of pollutant will be discharged.
