First Korean to Attain a Ph.D in Media Education

Choi Chang Sup(60), who is the current dean of Sogang University's Mass Communication Graduation School, received the first doctoral degree from Australia in the relatively unknown field of 'Media Education.'
Choi had been interested in a program that brings newspapers into the classroom for educational purposes, called 'Newspaper in Education(NIE)', since 1975. At the time, he felt that media pollution was a lot more dangerous than environmental pollution.
Choi had to wait for more than 20 years before he could act on his interest. He started researching the Australian education system in 1995 to find a program that offered post-graduate studies in media education. He at last completed his thesis, titled, 'Research of Media Education's Introduction' to receive a Ph.D degree from La Trobe University.
Choi will continue to challenge mass communication 'theology' in Rome this summer.
