Organizations Ask for Investigation of Claimed Press Coercion Evidence

Civil organizations Tuesday asked for the investigation of suspicions of press coercion raised by opposition assemblyman Jung Hyung-keun at the National Assembly Monday afternoon.
They said that the details of the internal report which Chung revealed were of grave concern and demanded that the purpose of the report be investigated.
Koh Kye-hyon, director of the Citizen's Coalition of Economic Justice, stated, 'If this is a genuine document, its contents must be clarified. Moreover, assemblyman Chung should explain how he obtained the secret paper.'
Chung Monday at the Natinal Assembly divulged that the government had drawn up a secret plot to tame the press before the general election in April 2000, which included the arrest of the owner of a major paper. JoongAng Ilbo has recently been protesting the incarceration of its president and publisher in the name of tax evasion.
