[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]The mistake was in giving card number

Feb 16,2003
I received frequent e-mails from a famous English-education company, and decided to try its one-month free trial program.
“You may even enjoy native speaker telephone education,” said the employee on the phone. She said that she would send me a full textbook along with the trial booklet, and asked for my credit card number. I told her that I would not need a full textbook so there was no need to give her the number. She said it was to verify my identity. “The text will be free, don’t worry,” she said. “We just need assurance.” I was gullible.
When the card bill arrived, I discovered that the company had arranged for me to pay 12 monthly installments. I called to cancel and complain. The answer was, “Why did you give the number in the first place?” They sure are adept at insolence toward consumers.
