Baby doctor delivers giant gift to school

Determined to contribute to community development and help the needy, one of Korea’s most prominent obstetricians donated 3 billion won ($3,182,011) to his alma mater.
Yoo Kwang-sa, the director of Dr. Yoo Women’s Hospital in Seoul, made the donation from his personal savings to Korea University last week.
The 67-year-old physician was inspired to give when he visited Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States to see his son.
Yoo learned that most buildings and facilities on the Harvard campus were built by funding from donors.
“I decided to donate my personal fortune after I visited Harvard University,” Yoo said.
“I think that I am supposed to take the initiative in providing a better educational environment to students like the Harvard alumni did.”
According to Korea University, Yoo’s donation will fund a new extension of the grand auditorium at the university.
It could be used to hold international conferences.
“It’s not the first time he’s made a donation. We really appreciate his constant donations,” said Oh Dong-joo, vice president of Korea University. “We plan to name the new extension auditorium the Yoo Kwang-sa Hall.”
Donating money to communities and schools and helping unfortunate neighbors has been a part of Yoo’s life for a long time.
His good deeds have earned him several medals and citations from the Korean government.
“My father overcame hardship and devoted his life to help me out,” Yoo said.
“I came to know about how important it is to help other people from him.”
In addition to his philanthrophy, the doctor is also well-known as the No. 1 obstetrician in Korea.
He has delivered more babies than anyone in the nation.
“I had about 450 women deliver in only one month,” said Dr. Yoo. “More than 100,000 women have given birth at my hospital in the past 30 years.”
