Korean documentary film “My Love, Don’t Cross That River” won the top prize in the Los Angeles Film Festival’s documentary section, its distributor, Daemyung Culture Factory, announced Friday.
According to a press release from the company, the heart-wrenching depiction of an elderly couple’s relationship, directed by Jin Mo-young, won the Documentary Award at the 21st edition of the Los Angeles Film Festival on Thursday, where it had its North American premiere.
“When I said I was going to make a movie out of an elderly couple’s love, nobody cared,” the director said in the release.
“Now, I finally feel that my wish to meet the audience all over the world has been achieved. I deeply appreciate them for acknowledging the true value of people respecting each other with love,” he added.
“My Love” which opened in Korea last November, was an unexpected hit, garnering an audience of 4.8 million and ranking as the most-watched documentary feature in Korea.
The low-budget feature portrays a 98-year-old man and his 89-year-old wife who live in the Korean countryside and are still in love after being married for more than 70 years.
The annual Los Angeles Film Festival, which began in 1995 as the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, has been focusing on showcasing diverse and innovative films as well as spotlighting talented filmmakers.
