The sweet smell of hanok (KOR)

As a foreigner living in a traditional Korean house, I often think about hanok and write about it. In the winter, I write about the home’s unique warmth, but in the summer, the heat and humidity of the rainy season makes me realize that the essence of hanok in the summer is not tangible or visible. The essence of hanok in the summer is the aroma.

The olfactory sense is said to hold the most memories. When you smell a familiar scent from the past, long-forgotten memories vividly come back to life.

Many Americans are reminded of the old house from their childhood, grassy fields, baseball and summer picnics from the smell of wet, freshly mown grass.

In a hanok, summer awakes the smells that had been dormant for a long time. Old memories return. The first smell of summer reminds me of the day that I first visited a hanok three years ago. The scent remains the same.

The first impression I had upon entering a hanok in the summer was the unforgettable scent of wood. While the scent is not completely gone in the winter, the woody fragrance is more intense and vivid on a hot and humid day. The smell of the floor covered with traditional paper lingers. Hints of soybean and perilla oils fill the house.

Inside the hanok, one can also detect cinnamon and jujube. The scent of the lacquer on old furniture and cabinets intensifies in the summer weather.

The most memorable smell may be that of summer rain. Sitting on the floor under the roof, the wet earth and wood mixed with the hot and humid air generate unique aromas.

Once the rain stops and the sun sets, I feel safe and warm. This clear, beautiful feeling can only be enjoyed during jangma, the rainy season.

No matter where I go and how old I get, I will be reminded of hanok when I smell this scent, just as freshly mown grass brings back memories of summer picnics and baseball.

여름날 한옥의 냄새 마크 테토 미국인·JTBC '비정상회담' 전 출연자
한옥에 사는 외국인으로서 나는 종종 한옥을 생각하고 한옥에 관해 쓴다. 겨울에는 겨울 속 한옥만의 따뜻한 느낌에 관해 썼다. 하지만 장마철이 시작되며 묵직하게 내리누르는 여름의 열기와 습기 때문에 여름 한옥의 본질은 만져서나 보아서 알 수 있는 게 아니란 것을 깨달았다. 여름에는 한옥의 본질이 그 냄새에 있다.
후각은 가장 많은 기억을 가진 감각이라고 한다. 과거에 익숙했던 냄새를 맡으면 오래전에 잊혀진 순간이 마음속에 생생하게 되살아나기 때문이다. 많은 미국인들은 갓 깎은 축축한 잔디 냄새가 코끝을 스치고 지나가는 순간 오래전에 잃어버린, 어린 시절에 살았던 집과 잔디밭, 야구, 여름 소풍에 대한 기억을 떠올린다. 한옥도 마찬가지다. 여름은 오랫동안 잠자고 있던 냄새를 깨우고 몇 년 묵은 기억을 불러온다. 여름이 찾아와 처음 냄새를 맡으면 그 즉시, 3년 전 처음 한옥을 방문했던 그 여름날이 생각난다. 그 냄새는 그대로다.
여름에 한옥에 처음 들어갔을 때의 첫인상은 잊을 수 없는 나무의 향기다. 겨울이라고 이 냄새가 완전히 사라지지는 않지만 여름의 열기와 습도와 함께 이 나무 냄새는 코를 가득 채우며 더욱 생생하게 다가온다. 한옥의 바닥을 덮는 한지로 된 장판지의 냄새도 있다. 이 장판지는 사람의 손으로 직접 콩기름과 들기름을 한 겹 도포해 만들어졌는데 그 냄새가 온 집에 가득 찬다. 여름에는 장판지에서 마치 마법처럼, 단지 기름뿐 아니라 대추와 계피 냄새까지 풍기며 집안을 가득 채운다. 오래된 가구와 반닫이에서는 여름이 되면 따뜻한 옻 냄새가 더욱 강하게 난다.
하지만 가장 기억에 남는 것은 여름비의 냄새가 아닐까 한다. 기와 아래 마지막 떨어지는 비를 피하며 마루에 앉아 있으면 마당의 젖은 흙과 습하고 더운 공기를 한가득 머금은 마루의 나무에서 특유의 냄새가 난다. 비가 그치고 아름다운 노을에 그 자리를 내줄 때면 안전하고 따뜻한 느낌이 든다. 이런 느낌은 오직 장마철에만 이토록 명징하고 아름답게 다가온다.
나는 세계 어디를 가더라도, 오랜 세월이 지나 나이를 먹었을지라도, 이런 냄새를 맡으면 이 한옥이 떠오를 것이다. 지금도 갓 깎은 잔디 냄새를 맡으면 어릴 적 여름 소풍과 잔디밭이 생생히 기억나는 것처럼 말이다.
