Translator has filmmaking dreams of her own

Throughout the awards season in the United States, one person received nearly as much attention as director Bong Joon-ho as he accepted award after award - his translator Sharon Choi, or Choi Sung-jae.

She was there almost every step of Bong’s triumphant march that began last May as he won the Palme d’Or, through countless international film events and finally up the steps to the stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday four times as Bong and the film were announced the winners of the Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay awards. In the Korean press, Choi was affectionately dubbed Bong’s “literary avatar” for her concise yet precise English translation of the director’s interviews. Local netizens weren’t the only ones who noticed the translator and her hard work. The Hollywood Reporter whisked Choi off for a quick interview at the Golden Globes last month, and after the Academy Awards on Sunday, The New York Times published an article about Choi and her work interpreting for Bong.

“When she’s interpreting - usually on camera, or to crowds of Hollywood royalty, or both - Choi’s voice never seems to waver,” is how New York Times described her.

“I know she has a huge fandom,” Bong said in English during a red carpet interview with E!, acknowledging Choi’s popularity.

The fandom that Bong mentioned is quite large. In comments on social media and YouTube, people praise Choi’s “neat choice of vocabulary that accurately transits the nuance of Bong’s witty remarks” and moreover, her “mad memory skills” through which she meticulously translates word-by-word.

On YouTube, video clips of Choi’s translations have been uploaded under titles such as “How [Choi] expertly deals with American reporter’s mortifying question” (over 1.5 million views), “How to accurately interpret Korean humor, level 10” (1.1 million views), or “Analysis of why Sharon Choi’s translation is capturing the world’s attention.”

Surprisingly enough, being an interpreter isn’t Choi’s main occupation, nor has she received any training before she joined Bong.

In a backstage interview after the Oscars, Bong introduced Choi as “a filmmaker studying films in the United States and preparing for a short feature film. I’m also curious to find out what she wrote.”

There isn’t much known about Choi, except for the fact that she’s made short films before and majored in cinematography.

On Twitter, some fans of K-pop superstar BTS have brought up that Big Hit Entertainment “should find someone like Choi so that BTS members can conveniently express their thoughts, which would in turn also bring about more meaningful and diverse questions.”

When it was revealed that Choi was a director, one tweet captured the feelings of many of her new fans: “It’s amazing how [Choi] trims the sharp remarks into softer and more dignified ways while she humorously emphasizes points that are important. I’m so curious about this person’s film.”

봉감독 개그까지 통역했다, 샤론 최의 영어에 반한 세계인들

제92회 아카데미 시상식에서 4관왕의 놀라운 기록을 낸 영화 '기생충'의 봉준호 감독이 이전에 할리우드 리포터지와 한 인터뷰에서 이렇게 찬사를 보낸 한 인물이 있다. 바로 시상식 시즌 내내 봉 감독과 '기생충' 배우들과 함께한 통역사 최성재(샤론 최•Sharon Choi)다.

봉준호의 '언어 아바타'로 활약한 샤론 최에 대한 해외 언론은 물론 네티즌들의 관심이 뜨겁다. 뉴욕타임스(NYT)는 9일(현지시간) 시상식이 끝나자마자 샤론 최를 별도의 기사로 조명했을 정도다. NYT는 "그녀는 레드 카펫과 심야 TV 출연을 통해 봉 감독의 연설과 인터뷰 내용을 영어로 번역했으며 아카데미 시상식에서 모두 4차례 무대에 올랐다"고 전했다. 신문은 이어 "무대 위에서 최씨의 차분한 존재는 사람들의 관심을 끌고 있다"며 "봉 감독은 'E!'와의 레드카펫 인터뷰에서 '(샤론 최가) 엄청난 팬덤을 갖고 있는 것으로 안다'고 말했다"고 전했다.

봉 감독이 언급한 '팬덤'은 과장이 아니다. 현재 SNS에는 "귀에 쏙쏙 들어오는 적절하고 깔끔한 어휘력" "뛰어난 언어능력도 그렇지만 기억력도 대박" "샤론 최 통역사의 미친 기억력" 등의 격찬이 쏟아지고 있다. 봉 감독의 의도를 충분히 살려 그의 유머까지 놀라우리만치 정확하게 전달했다는 것이다.

현재 유튜브(Youtube)에도 샤론 최의 통역 장면을 담은 영상이 조회 수 100만 회를 넘길 정도로 인기다.' 미국 기자의 곤란한 질문에 능숙 대처' (152만회), '가장 어렵다는 한국어 유머 통역하기'(111만회), '기생충 영화 흥행에 샤론 최 통역사가 주목받는 이유 분석'(114만회) 등등 통역 동영상이 시선을 끌고 있다.

최 씨에 대해 알려진 것은 별로 없다, 단편 영화를 만든 적이 있는 영화학도 출신이라는 정도다. 봉 감독은 시상식 후 진행한 백스테이지 인터뷰에서 "최씨가 미국에서 영화를 공부하고 있고 단편영화를 준비 중이다. 나도 그가 쓴 각본의 내용이 궁금하다"고 말했다.

'기생충' 홍보를 위해 지난해 12월 '투나잇쇼'에 출연했을 때 진행자 지미 팰런이 영화 내용을 물었다. 봉 감독이 "스토리를 모르고 봐야 재미있다"라고 한 것을 최 씨는 "the film is the best when you go into it cold"라고 통역했다. 구어체로 봉 감독의 뜻을 명확하게 전달한 것이다.

최씨의 영어 실력은 해외에서 유학을 했거나 현지에 사는 사람들조차 "감탄을 불러일으키는 수준"이라는 평가다. 언어의 뉘앙스를 제대로 살린 그의 정확한 통역이 문화 차이를 좁히는 데 큰 역할을 했다는 것이다. 문화 교류에서 통역의 중요성을 환기시켰다는 얘기다. 심지어 "신성한 통역이 무엇인지 보여줬다"는 극찬도 나왔다.

일부 트위터리안은 "방탄소년단도 전문 통역이 있으면 깊은 생각을 더 전달하고 질문도 더 다양해질 것"이라는 의견을 내놓고 있다.
트위터에서는 그가 영화감독이라는 사실이 알려지자 "날카로운 부분은 부드럽고 품위있게, 강조하려던 부분은 더 날카롭고 유머러스하게 다듬어서 통역하는 거 보면 대단하다. 이 분의 영화가 궁금하다"는 내용의 글이 올라와 뜨거운 호응을 얻고 있다. 이제 사람들은 샤론 최의 영화를 기다리고 있다.
