An offer of relief through music

When singer Kim Chang-wan heard that a magnitude-9.0 quake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11, he knew he had to do something to help.

The 57-year-old held a charity concert entitled “Why on Earth” yesterday evening at V-Hall near Hongik University in Seoul. The Kim Chang-wan Band and 16 other groups participated in the concert, including Crying Nut, Chang Ki-ha and the Faces, Kingston Rudieska, and Seoul Electric Band.

Proceeds go to quake victims.

Prior to the concert, the singer wrote a poem expressing his condolences: “The land lies there without a word/ So does the sea in silence/ No ears for a lamenting wail/ And no hands for streaming tears/ I am bracing you, my friend/ You can cry and howl in my arms.”

Kim composed a melody to go with his poem. The song “Why on Earth” was performed at the end of the concert.

“I hope the charity concert delivers our warmest condolences to Japan,” said Kim in an interview.

Kim came up with the idea to hold the charity event when he asked Hasegawa Yohei, his guitarist, if his family in Japan was safe (Yohei’s family was found to be in good health).

Afterwords, Kim decided to offer consolation through music.

The events of March 11 brought up memories of Kim’s youngest brother, Kim Chang-ik, who died in a car accident during a blizzard in 2008. “My brother had an accident due to snow. I thought of how cruel nature can be in some way ... But compared to [Japan’s] terrible catastrophe, my brother’s accident was a minor personal affair,” said Kim.

For the singer, the earthquake was much more than a misfortune in a neighboring country. “In a sense, I see it as a crisis of human beings. [The accident] presented many philosophical questions for me; neither politics nor the economy is structured to provide answers. In the end, only humans can embrace the pain of other humans,” Kim said.

Kim hopes the concert serves as a venue for communication between Koreans and Japanese.

“Though Korea and Japan are still entangled with issues like politics, this incident elevates a feeling of solidarity. I want more people to ponder life and communicate together through the concert,” said Kim.

홍대 앞 자선콘서트 "일본 힘내라"

18일 오후 7시께 서울 마포구 홍익대 인근 '브이홀'에서는 일본 동북부를 강타한 대지진으로 실의에 빠진 일본인을 도우려는 의미 있는 공연이 열렸다.

가수 김창완(57)씨가 주축이 돼 마련한 '일본 지진 피해자를 위한 대한민국 뮤지션들의 순수 자선콘서트'.

김창완 밴드뿐 아니라 크라잉넛, 장기하와 얼굴들, 서울전자음악단 등 총 20개의 밴드가 출연료를 받지 않고 공연에 참여했다.

공연 시작 40분 전부터 시민 100여명이 건물 밖까지 길게 줄지어 서 있었다. 한 시간여 만에 관객은 350명까지 불었다.

20~30대 젊은 층부터 머리가 희끗희끗한 중년의 부부, 가족과 파란 눈동자의 외국인까지 공연장을 찾은 이들은 다양했다.

1인당 입장료 1만5천원을 낸 관람객들은 모금함에도 5천원짜리부터 10만원권 수표까지 각자 성금을 냈다. 한 사람 한 사람의 정성이 차곡차곡 쌓여 갔다.

김창완 씨는 공연을 시작하기 전 "오늘 공연은 밖으로는 힘든 시간을 보내는 일본 국민을 위로하고 안으로는 이 자리에 모인 가족, 친구들에게 일상의 소중함을 일깨우는 의미로 준비했다"고 말했다.

그는 "오늘 공연이 여러분의 가슴을 울리고 나아가 바다 건너 일본 피해자들의 상처를 어루만져 주길 기대한다"고 덧붙였다.

이날 공연에는 인디밴드, 일렉트로닉 팝 밴드, 아카펠라 그룹, 헤비메탈 밴드 등이 나와 총 40여곡을 들려줬다. 공연이 시작되자 무거운 분위기는 사라지고 어느새 흥이 넘쳐났다.

출연팀들은 연주 직전 "일본 지진 피해자 분들이 힘내셨으면 좋겠다"는 인사를 잊지 않았다.

공연 마지막에는 김창완 씨가 대지진 참사로 피해를 본 희생자들을 추모하는 자작곡 'Why on earth'를 공개했다.

"땅은 말이 없이 저기 누워 있고 / 바다도 말이 없이 저기 철썩인다 / 원통한 소리 들어주는 귀 없고 / 흐르는 눈물 닦아주는 손 없다 / 친구야 내가 너를 안아줄게 / 울어라 내가 너를 안아줄게…"

이날 공연에 참여한 아카펠라 그룹 '메이트리'의 리더 장상인(33)씨는 "일본에도 아카펠라 그룹 친구들이 많은데 무사했으면 좋겠다. 일본인들이 자신들을 위해 열심히 노래부르는 누군가가 있는 걸 알아줬으면 한다"고 했다.

남자친구와 함께 온 여민희(24.여)씨는 "일본에 지진이 난 이후로 기부를 하지는 못 했는데 이런 방법으로나마 도울 수 있어 다행이다"고 말했다.

남편과 공연장을 찾은 백리혜(47.여)씨는 "일본인들에게 좌절하지 말고 힘내라는 말을 전하고 싶다"고 말했다.

주최 측은 이날 관람료 등 수익금 전액을 김창완 밴드의 일본인 멤버를 통해 일본에 전달할 예정이다.
