Jangseong at top in CSAT scores; school credited

Students in Jangseong County, South Jeolla, where the private autonomous Jangseong High School is located, received the highest average scores in the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) in 2010.

The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation released the test results yesterday of the 450,944 high school students nationwide who took the CSAT in 2010.

Among all cities and counties nationwide, students in Jangseong County scored the highest in all four subjects - 116.5 in Korean language, 113.9 in Math-Ga, 125.1 in Math-Na and 119.6 in English language. Math-Ga and Math-Na focus on different tracks of mathematics and are geared towards the sciences and the liberal arts respectively.

Ban Sang-jin, the school principal, said since the school changed to an autonomous school in 2008, it has attracted smart students from other cities, with about half of the students coming from outside the county. It is one of four high schools in the county. The county saw a significant improvement in CSAT scores since the autonomous school opened, the analysis found.

Of the top 30 cities and counties nationwide, 16 regions have so-called “elite high schools,” such as special purpose high schools and autonomous high schools, the analysis said.

In Yeonje District in Busan, which ranked second on average scores in Korean language and Math-Na, there are two special purpose high schools - Busan Foreign Language High School and Busan Science High School. Gwacheon in Gyeonggi, which has Gwacheon Foreign Language High School, ranked third in Korean language and Math-Na.

Students in Incheon ranked lowest on the average scores of three subjects, 98.4 in Korean, 96.5 in Math-Na and 96.9 in English. In the Math-Ga, students in North Jeolla got the lowest average score with 93.8.

Lee Byeong-wuk, an official of the Incheon Education Office said demographics played in role in Incheon scoring so low. “As Incheon is growing fast, many schools are being founded but they don’t provide stable and organized classes as much as schools in other regions do,” said Lee, who added that “many smart students move to Seoul, where many prestigious special purpose high schools are located.”

The institute said the gap between the best and the worst schools on the average scores are 76.2 in Korean, 63.4 in Math-Ga, 61.9 in Math-Na and 72.2 in English. Compared to the test in 2009, the education gap between the best and the worst regions was wider than in the test in 2010, the institute added.

The institute said students of private high schools scored higher than those attending public high schools in all subjects.

Students attending coeducational high schools scored lower than students in girls- or boys-only high schools.

In Cheongwon County, North Chungcheong, the average scores of students ranked 10th nationwide, a big improvement compared to 2009.

2011학년도 대학수학능력시험에서 시도간 표준점수 평균이 영역에 따라 최대 13점, 학교 간에는 76점 차이가 나는 등 지역ㆍ학교별 성적 격차가 굳어진 것으로 나타났다.

서울의 강남 8학군 같은 대도시 인기학군 지역, 외고ㆍ과학고ㆍ자립형사립고 등 특목고가 있는 지역, 전국 단위로 학생을 선발하는 지역의 성적이 다른 지역보다 월등히 높은 현상이 심화됐다.

한국교육과정평가원은 2011학년도 대입 수능을 치른 전국 일반계고 재학생 45만944명의 성적을 기초 분석한 '2011학년도 대입 수능 성적 분석결과'를 30일 발표했다.

평가원은 2005∼2009학년도 수능성적 분석 결과를 2009년 최초로 공개한데 이어 작년에 2010학년도 수능성적 분석결과를 발표했고 올해도 2011학년도 수능성적 분석결과를 공개했다.

올해 분석결과에는 2010학년도 대비 표준점수 평균 향상도, 학교가 특목고인지 일반고인지 같은 학교 변인이 추가됐다.

16개 시도 중 영역별 표준점수 평균 1위는 제주로 언어(105.3점), 수리가(106.9점), 수리나(106.1점), 외국어(105.7점) 등 4개 영역에서 모두 최상위였다.

성적이 낮은 시도는 인천이 언어(98.4점), 수리나(96.5점), 외국어(96.9점)으로 3개 영역 최하위였고 수리가는 전북(93.8점)이 최하위였다.

시군구 단위 표준점수 평균 1위는 전남 장성군으로 언어(116.5점), 수리가(113.9점), 수리나(125.1점), 외국어(119.6점) 4개영역 모두 전국 1위였다. 부산 연제구는 언어ㆍ수리나에서 2위, 수리가 5위, 외국어 3위였고 경기 과천시가 언어ㆍ수리나 3위, 수리가 4위, 외국어 2위 등으로 최상위권이다.

전국 학교간 표준점수 평균 최고학교와 최저학교간 차이는 언어 76.2점, 수리가 63.4점, 수리나 61.9점, 외국어 72.2점이었다. 이는 지난해 언어 73.4점, 수리가 61.4점, 수리나 59.6점, 외국어 69.2점 차이보다 격차가 조금 더 벌어진 것이다.

장성고가 있는 장성군을 비롯해 표준점수 평균 30위권에 포함된 시군구 중 상당수는 특목고, 자사고 등 전국 단위로 학생을 모집하는 고교 소재지였다. 모든 영역에서 표준점수 평균 상위 30위에 포함된 시군구는 서울 강남구와 서초구, 부산 연제구 등 특별시나 광역시의 이른바 '인기학군'으로 불리는 구 지역 7곳, 시 지역 6곳, 군 지역 3곳이었다.

16개 시도별 표준점수 평균 차이는 언어 6.9점, 수리가 13.1점, 수리나 9.6점, 외국어 8.8점이었다.

국공립고보다는 사립고가 모든 영역에서 표준점수 평균이 높은 현상은 2010학년도보다 심해졌고 언어와 외국어 영역에서는 여고가, 수리가ㆍ수리나에서는 남고가 강세이며 남녀공학은 모든 영역에서 가장 성적이 낮은 현상도 여전했다.

올해 처음 제공된 수능성적 향상도 분석결과 2010학년도에 비해 표준점수 평균이 가장 많이 오른 시도는 언어 경북, 수리가 충북ㆍ제주ㆍ광주ㆍ대구ㆍ전북, 수리나 강원ㆍ제주ㆍ충북ㆍ충남ㆍ경북, 외국어 충북이었다.

시군구별로는 언어에서는 전남 신안군, 수리가 경북 봉화군, 수리나와 외국어 영역에서 강원 영월군의 성적 향상도가 높았다.
