Seoul-Beijing flights to be started at Gimpo

Travelers planning to travel from Seoul to Beijing will be able to depart from Gimpo International Airport instead of Incheon International Airport starting in July, cutting down on the time and cost.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs announced yesterday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with China, which will set up a new flight route connecting Gimpo Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport.

Two airlines from each country will fly twice a day, adding up to 28 flights a week.

Currently, two Korean airline companies, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, operate the Incheon-Beijing route 18 times and 24 times a week, respectively. And two Chinese airlines, Air China and China Southern, operate 21 flights and 14 flights a week, respectively.

The two countries have been negotiating about the Gimpo-Bejing route since January 2009 but it had been delayed because Beijing Capital International Airport lacked time slots for Korean planes.

After a strong push from Korea, the two countries agreed to reduce the frequency of Incheon-Beijing flights and replace them with Gimpo-Beijing flights, according to the ministry.

The ministry said Seoul-based passengers will be able to save up to an hour of travel time to and from the airport if they fly in and out of Gimpo instead of Incheon since the airport is closer to downtown Seoul. Moreover, passengers can purchase the ticket for 5,000 ($4.60) to 6,000 won cheaper than flights departing from Incheon.

“The new route will not only improve travelers’ convenience but also increase the number of Chinese visitors to Korea,” said Park Jong-heum, a ministry official.

The establishment of a Gimpo-Beijing route will link three capital cities - Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo - allowing more convenient travel for business customers, the ministry said.

The ministry will soon ask Korean Air and Asiana Airlines to submit their desired number of flights. Asiana Airlines, which has been optimistic about converting some of its flights from Incheon to Gimpo, said that it “desires to fly at least seven times to 14 times a week.” Meanwhile, Korean Air expressed concern that if it converts seven flights a week to depart from Gimpo, Incheon would be left with only 11 flights a week, which would undermine the company’s competitiveness in not having flights every day from Incheon.

김포~베이징 7월부터 항공셔틀

한·중·일 하루 생활권으로 인천공항 이용보다 1시간 단축

7월부터 김포~베이징(北京) 항공노선이 개설된다. 한국과 중국 항공사 각각 두 곳이 매일 2회씩 주 28회 항공셔틀을 운항한다. 이로써 한·중·일 3국의 수도를 잇는 베세토(베이징~서울~도쿄) 라인이 완성돼 세 나라가 하루생활권으로 묶이게 됐다.

국토해양부 박종흠 항공정책관은 26일 “김포~베이징 노선이 개설되면 승객 편의가 크게 개선되고 중국 관광객 유치도 유리해질 것”이라고 말했다. 국토부는 김포공항을 통해 베이징에 갈 경우 인천공항 이용 때보다 승객들은 50~60분의 시간을 단축할 수 있을 것으로 전망했다. 또 김포공항이 도심에서 가깝고 공항이용료도 저렴해 5000~6000원의 비용을 절감할 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다.

김포~베이징 간의 운항 합의는 신규 노선을 추가하는 것이 아닌 인천~베이징 노선에서 주 28회를 빼내 김포공항으로 전환하는 방식이다.

중국 측이 베이징공항이 포화상태라며 새로운 노선을 추가하는 데 난색을 표해 인천공항에서 운항 중인 노선 일부를 김포공항으로 옮긴 것이다.

국토부는 조만간 대한항공과 아시아나항공의 취항 신청을 받을 계획이다. 현재 인천~베이징 간은 대한항공이 주 18회, 아시아나항공이 주 24회를 각각 운항 중이다. 김포~베이징 노선 개설을 줄곧 지지해 온 아시아나항공은 “최소 주 7회에서 최대 주 14회의 운항을 희망한다”고 말했다. 하지만 대한항공은 “내부 검토를 거쳐 운항 횟수를 신청하겠다”는 입장이다. 대한항공은 인천에서 김포로 주 7회를 옮길 경우 인천엔 주 11회밖에 남지 않는다.

◆항공셔틀=국제선 또는 단거리 항공노선에서 셔틀버스처럼 승객 수에 관계없이 정기적으로 운항하는 항공편이다. 김포~하네다는 2003년, 베이징~하네다는 2009년부터 운행 중이다.
