Incheon is the ‘go-to’ place for airport execs

A barrage of phone calls from airports around the world is being made to Incheon International Airport, asking for clues to its management know-how after it was named the Best Airport Worldwide in Airport Service Quality for six consecutive years.

Some ask when airport President Lee Chae-wook is available for a meeting, while others request the names of the Korean construction companies that built the airport.

Lee visited Brazil last Friday to make a speech on the topic, “Why can’t we make our customers happy?” at Airport Infra Expo 2011.

“I’ll introduce the management know-how of Incheon International Airport and its success in providing such successful services such as the world’s fastest immigration procedures,” said Lee.

About 157 airport officials from South America participated in the expo, including Brazil, which will hold the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Early this month, Lee was invited to Harvard Business School and gave a lecture about the success of Incheon. Lee is also scheduled to visit Australia in July as a keynote speaker at an Asia-Pacific aviation industry seminar.

“Other countries including Thailand, China and Hong Kong also requested President Lee Chae-wook to give speeches, but he had to turn down the requests due to his busy schedule,” an Incheon Airport official said. “Numerous airport officials from around the world said if President Lee can’t make the trip, they would at least like to have the names of the construction companies or subcontractors in Korea that participated in the construction of the airport,” the official said.

Meanwhile, airport officials from all over the world are touching down at Incheon Airport. Last week, officials from Aeroports de Paris (ADP), the largest airport operator in Europe, and Schiphol Group visited Incheon to take a look around. ADP, which operates Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, and Schiphol Group, which operates Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands, together operate about 40 airports around the world.

“When we wanted to visit Charles de Gaulle Airport prior to constructing Incheon airport, we waited months for a reply. But now, they’re the ones who want to visit us,” said an Incheon Airport official.

인천공항의 운영 노하우를 벤치마킹하려는 해외 공항의 러브콜이 쏟아지고 있다. 인천공항이 항공업계의 노벨상으로 불리는 세계최우수공항상을 6연패하면서 개항 10년 만에 세계 최고 공항의 지위에 올랐기 때문이다. 이를 계기로 이채욱 인천국제공항공사 사장을 초청하려는 외국 공항의 요청이 줄을 잇고 있다.

이 사장은 29일 브라질에서 열리는 제1회 남미 공항인프라 엑스포에서 ‘왜 우리는 승객들을 행복하게 하지 못하나?’란 주제로 강연한다. 이 사장은 27일 “세계에서 가장 빠른 출입국 절차와 차별화된 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 비결 등을 소개할 것”이라고 말했다. 이번 엑스포는 2014년 월드컵과 2016년 올림픽 등을 앞둔 브라질과 페루 등 157개의 남미 공항 관계자들이 참석한다. 이 사장은 7월에는 호주를 방문해 아태 항공산업 미래 전망 세미나의 기조 연사로 나선다. 또 이달 초에는 하버드 경영대학원의 초청을 받아 인천공항의 성공 비결을 강의하기도 했다.

해외 공항 관계자의 인천공항 방문도 끊이지 않고 있다. 지난주에는 60여 년의 역사를 가진 유럽 최대의 공항 운영사인 ADP와 스키폴공항그룹의 최고위급 임원들이 찾았다. 이들은 각각 샤를드골공항(프랑스)과 스키폴공항(네덜란드)의 운영사로 전 세계 40여 공항의 운영권을 갖고 있다. 인천공항 관계자는 “인천공항을 지을 때 벤치마킹하기 위해 방문 신청을 했더니 유명 공항들이 묵묵부답이어서 몇 달을 기다렸던 적이 있는데 격세지감을 느낀다”고 말했다. 인천공항을 벤치마킹하려는 방문객은 지난해에만 840여 명, 개항 후 5200여 명에 이른다.
