Pacquiao retains title in sluggish win over Mosley

LAS VEGAS - Manny Pacquiao won a lopsided 12-round decision over Shane Mosley on Saturday night, retaining his WBO welterweight title with his 14th consecutive victory. The victory, however, was not what people have come to expect from the Filipino.

Pacquiao (54-3-2) didn’t get the knockout he wanted but the Filipino Congressman retained his position as the most dominant and exciting fighter in the sport, methodically beating Mosley (46-7-1) at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao knocked Mosley down with a left hook in the third round, a punch that seemed to sap Mosley’s willingness to engage.

Pacquiao then ran after Mosley for the rest of the fight but the former champion who has never been stopped in 18 years in the ring managed to finish the 12th round on his feet.

Pacquiao won 120-108 on one scorecard, 120-107 on a second and 119-108 on the third. The Associated Press had him winning 118-110.

For Mosley, the fight was strikingly similar to his bout a year ago against Floyd Mayweather Jr., except this time he didn’t even land a big punch like he did early on against Mayweather.

His biggest moment on this night came when referee Kenny Bayless mistakenly ruled that Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round when he hadn’t even hit him with a punch.

The ruling, however, seemed to spur Pacquiao on and he went after Mosley for the rest of the round and again in the 11th.

The crowd by then, were chanting “Knock him out, knock him out,” but Pacquiao, bothered by a cramp in his left leg since the fourth round, didn’t have enough to finish him off.

“It wasn’t my best performance,” Pacquiao said. “I did my best. I did not expect this result.”

Mosley said he thought he did well despite losing round after round and refused to blame his bad performance on his age.

“I fought the best fighter in the world,” Mosley said. “He has exceptional power, power that I’ve never been hit like this before.”

Mosley was tentative from the opening bell, moving backward and seemingly unwilling to trade punches with Pacquiao.

Pacquiao finally made contact with a left hook at the end of the third round, sending Mosley to the canvas for only the third time in his professional career.

Pacquiao pressed the fight for most of the night but he also appeared hesitant to take many chances, which trainer Freddie Roach said was because of the muscle cramp that his corner tried to massage between the rounds.

“He had no leverage to move after that,” Roach said. “It was a very gutty performance in my mind.”

The sellout crowd of 16,412 booed Mosley repeatedly in the late rounds for his refusal to trade punches with Pacquiao.

Mosley fought as if trying to protect his legacy of having never been knocked out and, if that was his strategy, it succeeded.

But it made for a lackluster fight and did nothing to burnish the legacy that the Filipino champion has established with 14 straight wins over the last six years - including some classic fights over the biggest names in the game.

Pacquiao made a minimum of $20 million for the fight, while Mosley was guaranteed $5 million.

매니 파퀴아오(33·필리핀)가 또 이겼다.

　파퀴아오는 8일(한국시간) 미국 네바다주 라스베이거스 MGM 그랜드 호텔 특설링에서 열린 세계복싱기구(WBO) 웰터급(66.68kg) 타이틀전에서 도전자 셰인 모슬리(40·미국)를 상대로 12회 판정승(3-0)을 거두고 챔피언 벨트를 지켰다. 사상 초유의 7체급 챔피언 파퀴아오는 시종 모슬리를 몰아쳐 14연승을 이어갔다.

　◆싱거운 한 판=파퀴아오와 모슬리의 대결은 올 상반기 최고의 흥행카드로 꼽혔다. 두 선수 모두 공격에 무게를 둔 돌격형 파이터다. 파퀴아오는 1m69㎝의 작은 키에 팔이 짧아서 신체적으로 불리하다. 그러나 폭발적인 스피드의 펀치와 풋워크가 장점이다. 왼손잡이인 그는 라이트 더블 잽과 강력한 레프트 스트레이트로 상대를 정신 없이 몰아붙인다. 그는 복싱 전문 사이트 복스렉과 링 등에서 체급에 관계없이 매기는 ‘파운드 포 파운드(P4P) 랭킹’에서 1위를 지키고 있다. 파퀴아오는 KO로 이긴 확률이 72%에 이를 정도로 공격적이다. 모슬리도 KO율이 85%다. KO패는 한 차례도 없었다. 이 때문에 이날 경기는 난타전이 될 것이라는 전망이 우세했다.

　그러나 소문난 잔치에 먹을 것이 없었다. 파퀴아오는 3라운드에 오른손-왼손 연속 펀치를 적중시켜 모슬리를 쓰러뜨렸다. 잔뜩 움츠린 모슬리는 뒤로 물러섰고, 위기 때는 파퀴아오를 끌어안는 등 소극적인 경기를 펼쳤다. 파퀴아오는 10라운드 중반 모슬리에게 밀려 넘어지는 바람에 어이없게 다운을 빼앗겼지만 흔들리지 않고 12회까지 경기를 마쳤다. 세 명의 심판은 각각 119-108, 120-108, 120-107의 점수를 주며 파퀴아오의 손을 들어줬다. 2006년부터 이어져 온 파퀴아오의 연승은 ‘14’로 늘어났다. 통산 전적은 53승(38KO)2무3패다. 파퀴아오는 경기 후 AP통신과의 인터뷰에서 “4회 이후 왼쪽 다리에 쥐가 났다”며 “오늘은 최고의 경기를 보여주지 못했다”고 했다.

　◆복싱의 영웅=이날 파퀴아오와 모슬리의 경기를 보기 위해 1만6412명의 만원 관중이 들어찼다. 이들은 경기 후반 모슬리가 소극적으로 나서자 야유를 보내기도 했다.

　파퀴아오는 이날 승리로 14연승을 이어가면서 복싱 수퍼 스타로서의 입지를 더욱 굳건히 했다. AP통신은 이번 경기 대전료로 파퀴아오가 최소 2000만 달러(약 217억원)를, 모슬리는 500만 달러(약 54억3000만원)를 받았을 것이라고 보도했다. 미국 스포츠 전문 채널 ESPN이 지난달 발표한 ‘세계에서 가장 돈을 많이 버는 스포츠 스타’ 자료에 따르면 파퀴아오는 연간 3200만 달러(약 345억원)를 벌어들여 미국 프로야구 뉴욕 양키스의 알렉스 로드리게스(36·미국)와 함께 공동 1위에 올랐다. 파퀴아오는 지난해 5월 필리핀 하원의원으로 당선돼 국회의원이라는 꿈까지 이뤘다. 그는 필리핀의 국민 영웅이다.

　복싱 프로모터 밥 애럼은 “그 누구도 파퀴아오를 상대로 제대로 된 경기를 할 수 없다. 현재 복싱계에 좋은 선수들이 있긴 하지만 파퀴아오 같은 선수는 만나본 적이 없기 때문”이라고 말했다.

　한편 ‘프로복싱의 전설’인 에반더 홀리필드(49·미국)는 이날 덴마크 코펜하겐에서 열린 브라이언 니엘센(덴마크)과의 논타이틀매치에서 10라운드 TKO승을 거뒀다.
