Team recovers body from Manaslu

The climb to the summit of Nepal’s Mount Manaslu by a Korean expedition team this month was bittersweet from the start. The team’s goal was not only to reach the peak of the world’s eighth highest mountain, but also to recover the bodies of two teammates lost in treacherous weather on a failed climb last year.

The expedition, led by Kim Mi-gon and named “For Freedom 2011 Manaslu Expedition,” was a partial success.

The team conquered the summit and recovered one body, although it had to leave the second behind.

Park Haeng-su and Yun Chi-won were part of Kim’s five-man team on an expedition to Mount Manaslu in April 2010. The two were lost in a whiteout at 8,100 meters (26,575 feet), just 60 meters from the summit.

The rest of the team was forced back. Helicopters were immediately dispatched to find the missing men but failed. Their families were forced to hold their funerals without their remains.

Park’s body was found at 7,500 meters by the team on May 4 and brought down to a base camp at 6,400 meters. The body was moved to a hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, where Park’s family and friends were waiting, said a press release from Fishtail Air, which transported the body.

The expedition announced that its three remaining members, Kim and two Sherpas, reached the summit on a second climb Monday morning Nepal time, six hours after they had left the last base camp.

Park’s body will be cremated in Nepal and the ashes flown back to Gwangju on May 13.

The team said yesterday that the search for Yun’s body will continue in the future.

산사나이들 히말라야서 숨진 동료 시신 수습
영호남 마나슬루 원정대 해발 7천500m 지점서 시신 수습
지난해 히말라야 마나슬루(Manasluㆍ8천163m) 등반 도중 숨진 동료 2명의 시신을 수습하기 위해 원정에 나선 영ㆍ호남 산악인들이 그중 1명의 시신을 찾아냈다.

10일 광주전남히말라얀클럽 등 지역 산악회에 따르면 '자유를 향한 2011마나슬루원정대(단장 위계룡)'가 지난달 28일 제4캠프 해발 7천500m지점에서 고(故) 박행수(당시 29.광주대OB) 대원의 시신을 찾아 악전고투에 제2캠프(6천400m)까지 옮겼다.

박 대원의 시신은 지난 4일 헬기 2대를 동원해 네팔 카트만두 병원으로 운구, 안치됐다.

그러나 제4캠프 아래 크레바스 지대에 있을 것으로 추정됐던 윤치원(당시 41.진해산악회) 대원의 시신은 끝내 찾지 못했다.

원정대는 가족들과 협의해 시신을 현지에서 화장한 뒤 오는 13일 광주로 옮겨와 무등산에 안장할 계획이다.

숨진 두 대원은 지난해 4월 24일 3명의 동료와 함께 마나슬루 정상 등반에 나섰다가 해발 8천100m 지점에서 강한 바람과 한 치 앞을 볼 수 없는 화이트 아웃을 만나 하산 도중 실종됐다.

원정대와 광주 및 경남산악연맹 관계자들이 현지에서 헬기를 동원해 수차례 수색했지만 끝내 시신을 찾지 못했고 결국 두 대원의 장례식은 고향인 광주와 진해에서 시신 없이 치러졌다.

그러나 동료들의 시신을 설원에 두고 올 수 없었던 영호남 산악인 9명은 지난 3월 고인들의 시신 수습과 마나슬루 등정을 위한 다시 원정대를 꾸렸다.

국내에서 시신 수습을 위한 원정대가 꾸려진 것은 지난 2005년 엄홍길 씨를 등반대장으로 한 '에베레스트 휴먼 원정대'에 이어 두 번째로 알려졌다.

한편, 박 대원의 시신 수습 후 정상 등정에 나선 원정대의 김미곤(39.한국도로공사산악팀) 대원은 9일 오전 제4캠프를 출발한 지 6시간 만에 정상에 올라 두 대원의 못다 핀 꿈을 이뤘다.

원정대는 오는 20일께 귀국할 예정이다.
