Fendi instructed to take fur off runway in Seoul

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has told Italian fashion house Fendi to get rid of all fur from a major fashion show to be held June 2 on the Han River’s “Floating Island,” or the event could be cancelled due to complaints from animal rights activists.

Seoul previously said in an April 11 press release that the show, entitled “Fendi on Han River,” will be held on the Floating Island next month and Fendi would show 60 pieces from its fall/winter collection, including 20 limited-edition fur items.

The city government was hoping the show would be a high-profile international debut for the three man-made islands and an opportunity to promote Seoul as a “design city.” The Fendi show was supposed to be broadcast live on the Internet, and more than 1,200 guests were invited to attend, including foreign celebrities, fashion leaders and lots of media.

But the city’s April announcement was met with strong opposition from animal activists here. Immediately after the announcement, the bulletin board on Seoul’s official Web site was peppered with messages from animal rights activists demanding Mayor Oh Se-hoon pull fur items from the show.

Fendi has expressed its bafflement, saying the government’s abrupt notice was “difficult to understand” after months of working together.

“I’m surprised to learn of Seoul city’s decision to possibly cancel the event if Fendi does not remove all fur pieces just two weeks before the event,” Fendi CEO Michael Burke said in a statement Sunday.

The Italian fashion house, however, said it will keep negotiating with city officials.

“There’s strong anti-fur sentiment here,” said city government spokesman Lee Jong-hyun in a phone interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily yesterday.

“Even if they are in the minority, we can’t simply ignore them.”

한강 ‘세빛둥둥섬’(플로팅 아일랜드)의 첫 번째 공식 행사로 예정된 ‘한강 펜디 패션쇼(FENDI on Han River)’가 무산될 위기에 놓였다. 서울시는 다음 달 2일 이탈리아의 명품업체인 펜디(FENDI)사와 공동으로 패션쇼를 열 예정이었다. 서울시는 지난 11일 보도자료를 내고 “전 세계에 ‘디자인 도시 서울’을 부각시킬 수 있는 기회”라며 “가을 겨울 의류 40점 이외에 20점의 모피가 첫선을 보인다”고 홍보했다. 하지만 패션쇼 중 모피 제품이 포함된 것에 대해 동물보호단체 등이 반대하고 나서자 서울시는 입장을 바꿨다. 지난 13일엔 “모피 행사를 빼지 않으면 패션쇼를 열 수 없다”고 펜디 측에 통보했다.

펜디 측은 당혹스러운 표정이다. 펜디의 마이클 버크 최고경영자(CEO)는 15일 보도자료를 통해 “지난 3월 서울을 방문했을 때 담당자들과 만나 확인까지 한 사안”이라며 “서울시가 국제적인 행사를 불과 2주 남기고 ‘모피를 빼지 않으면 행사를 취소하겠다’고 요구한 것은 받아들이기 어렵다”고 말했다.

펜디 측은 “ 한강이 서울과 한국의 역사를 상징하고 있어 2007년 중국 만리장성 패션쇼에 버금가는 행사를 준비하고 있다”며 “이미 세계 각국에서 1200여 명의 저명인사를 초대했고 인터넷 생중계까지 계획했는데 행사를 제대로 진행할 수 없다는 사실이 안타깝다”고 밝혔다. 이에 대해 서울시 신면호 경제진흥본부장은 “모피 제품에 대한 사회적 정서가 좋지 않다”며 “모피를 제외한 상태에서 행사가 진행되길 바란다”고 말했다.

서울시의 이중 잣대도 문제다. 서울시가 지난 3월 말 주관했던 ‘2011 서울패션위크’에선 일부 디자이너들이 모피 신상품을 올렸지만 시는 아무런 조치를 하지 않았다.
