City terminal starts to attract more passengers

Kim Byung-du, 51, had to get from Daegu to Incheon airport to catch a flight to Shanghai. He KTX’d to Seoul Station and then descended on the airport train, where he checked in his bags and completed immigration procedures. Everything was so swift, that Kim decided to pop out of the station before proceeding to his flight.

“I’m going to grab lunch with a friend who lives nearby,” he said, “before heading up to Incheon airport.”

The city airport terminal in Seoul Station, or Korail Airport Railroad Seoul Station & Terminal (Karst), opened at the end of last year when the Incheon International Airport Railroad (AREX) linking Seoul Station to the airport opened.

For the first few months, the city airport terminal didn’t have many users. But people have been are realizing its convenience, and now 300 people use it each day.

By comparison, the COEX city airport terminal in southern Seoul, which opened in 1993, has about 700 daily users a day during the summer peak season.

Currently, only Korean Air, Asiana and Jeju Air ticket holders can use the check-in and immigration services at Karst. (At COEX city airport terminal passengers on domestic flights and Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Air Canada can check in and go through immigration.) “Since we opened recently, we don’t have many airlines,” said Kim Sun-geun, public relations manager of AREX. “We’re working on adding more foreign airlines.”

Karst users check in, surrender their luggage and go through immigration, then they take the AREX, which takes either 43 minutes or 53 minutes depending on whether you take the express or slow train.

The Karst user then goes through the counter normally used by diplomats and airline employees, avoiding lines at immigration. Check-in at Seoul Station must be completed three hours before to the departure time.

Karst is particularly popular with travelers living outside Seoul. State-run railroad operator Korail has started selling KTX tickets and express train tickets to the airport in packages.

“It’s great because I can send heavy luggage beforehand,” said Myung Jong-seon, 34, a frequent Karst customer. “The only drawback is that the advance check-in service is only available for few airlines, and there’s no service for domestic flyers.”

Karst also runs mock-travel experiences for preschool and elementary field trip programs. The students go through check-in and immigration procedures using mock passports and tickets.

After arriving at Incheon airport, they then watch planes take off and land.

짐 부치고 가볍게 공항으로 … 해외여행, 서울역에서 출발~

서울역 공항터미널, 하루 이용객 300여 명으로 늘어

지난달 31일 오전 11시 서울역 지하 2층의 도심공항터미널에선 대구에서 올라온 김병두(50)씨가 탑승수속을 밟고 있었다. 김씨는 오후 3시 중국 상하이행 비행기를 타기 위해 이날 아침 KTX로 올라왔다. 그는 카운터에서 짐을 부치고 출국심사대에서 출국수속까지 마쳤다. 여권에 출국심사 도장까지 받았다. 김씨는 “미리 짐을 부치고 출국수속까지 하니 홀가분하다”며 “서울에 사는 친구와 점심을 한 뒤 인천공항으로 갈 생각”이라고 말했다.

서울역 도심공항터미널 은 지난해 말 인천공항철도 전 구간(20.4㎞)이 개통하면서 문을 열었다. 처음엔 이용객이 많지 않았지만 최근엔 하루 300여 명으로 늘었다. 1993년 영업을 시작한 강남구 삼성동의 코엑스 도심공항터미널의 이용객이 하루 평균 700여 명(성수기 기준)인 것을 감안하면 작은 수는 아니다.

특히 지방에서 올라오는 해외여행객에게 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다. 서울역에서 KTX와 공항철도가 연결되기 때문에 미리 탑승수속을 마치고 시내로 나가 여유시간을 활용할 수 있다.

코레일은 KTX와 공항철도 승차권을 묶어 파는 서비스도 시작했다. 여기서 탑승수속을 마치고 공항철도를 타면 40여 분 만에 인천공항에 도착할 수 있다. 공항에선 외교관이나 항공사 직원들이 이용하는 전용 출국통로를 통해 바로 탑승장으로 나가면 된다.

탑승수속은 항공기 출발시각 3시간 전까지는 끝내야 한다. 해외 출장이 잦아 서울역 공항터미널을 자주 이용한다는 명종선(34)씨는 “무거운 짐을 미리 부칠 수 있어 좋다”며 “다만 입주 항공사가 적고 국내선은 이용할 수 없는 게 단점”이라고 말했다.

현재 서울역 도심공항터미널에는 대한항공과 아시아나항공, 제주항공만이 입주해 있다. 반면에 코엑스 도심공항터미널은 국적항공사 이외에도 콴타스항공과 싱가포르항공, 카타르 항공, 에어캐나다 등이 들어와 있다. 또, 국내선도 이용할 수 있다. 코레일공항철도의 김순근 홍보부장은 “운영 초기라 국적항공사만 입주해 있지만 외국 항공사를 유치하는 것도 협의하고 있다”고 말했다.

서울역 도심공항터미널은 유치원·초등학생들의 현장체험 학습장소로도 활용되고 있다. 모의여권과 모의항공권을 활용해 탑승·출국수속 과정을 체험하고 공항철도를 타고 인천공항으로 이동해 항공기 이착륙 장면까지 구경하는 코스다.

체험학습을 하려면 코레일공항철도 홈페이지(www.arex.or.kr)에서 신청하면 된다. 3개월~1주일 전에 40명 내외의 단체로 신청해야 하며 이용구간의 공항철도 승차권을 구입해야 한다.
