GNP lawmaker loses his seat

Gong Sung-jin, a lawmaker from the Grand National Party, lost his National Assembly seat yesterday after the Supreme Court upheld a suspended prison sentence handed out by lower courts against him for receiving illegal political funds. By law, legislators can be stripped of their posts if they are sentenced to pay fines of 1 million won ($926) or receive heavier punishments for violating election or political fund laws. The ruling reduces the number of GNP seats to 171 in the 299-seat National Assembly. Gong was indicted in 2009 on charges of receiving 200 million won in illegal political funds from businessmen in 2008.
