Warrants sought in med students assault case

Seoul Seongbuk Police Precinct yesterday sought arrest warrants for three Korea University medical students who allegedly assaulted a female classmate while she was asleep.

“We requested the arrest warrants for the students because they assaulted their classmate, who has studied with them in the same college for six years, and did it in a group for a couple of hours, which is a grave crime,” a police official said. “They could conspire with each other to deny the allegation [if they are not arrested]. We also think they need punishment for causing severe suffering to the victim.”

On May 21, the three male students and their female classmate took a trip to Gapyeong, Gyeonggi, and drank together at a guest house.

After the woman fell asleep, the three students allegedly took off her clothes and touched her body, police said. The students also took pictures and videos of her on their mobile phones.

The next morning, after figuring out what happened, the female student went to the police as well as a center for victims of sexual assault. She said she didn’t drink enough to fall asleep, raising suspicion that the men dropped sleeping pills in her drink.

According to police, the three students admitted they took pictures and sexually assaulted her, but said they didn’t use any drugs and didn’t rape her.

The National Forensic Service said it didn’t find any traces of sleeping pills or signs of rape, according to police. The police also said they had recovered some of the video clips from the alleged perpetrators’ cell phones, which had been deleted. The woman is now receiving therapy.

Police said they will also investigate 10 people who falsely accused innocent students at Korea University of being the alleged offenders online.

Since June 3, more than 16,000 people have signed an online campaign called, “We want the three Korea University medical students to be expelled.” The campaign post reads “We don’t want to be treated by doctors who were once sex offenders.”

경찰, 집단 성추행 의대생 3명 영장

고려대 의대생의 집단 성추행 사건을 수사 중인 서울 성북경찰서는 가해 남학생 3명에 대해 성폭력범죄의 처벌 등에 관한 특례법상 특수강제추행 혐의로 구속영장을 신청했다고 14일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 고대 의대에 재학 중인 이들은 지난달 21일 오후 10시께 경기 가평군 한 민박집에서 동기 여학생 A씨가 술에 취해 잠든 틈을 타 이튿날 아침까지 추행하고 휴대전화와 디지털카메라로 A씨의 몸을 찍은 혐의를 받고 있다.

경찰 관계자는 "3명이 장시간 추행했다는 점에서 범죄의 중대성이 인정되고 서로 말을 맞춰 범행을 부인할 가능성도 있다"며 "실제로 피의자 가운데 한 명은 처음 진술을 번복하고 있다"고 영장 신청 사유를 설명했다.

경찰은 피의자들이 범행 당시 A씨를 찍었다가 삭제한 사진은 일부 복원했지만, 국립과학수사연구원 감정 결과 술에 약물을 타거나 추행을 넘어 강제로 성관계를 한 사실은 확인하지 못했다고 전했다.

경찰은 이번 사건 피의자들에 대한 '신상 털기' 과정에서 피의자로 잘못 지목된 고대 의대생의 진정을 받아들여 누리꾼 10명에 대한 조사도 벌이고 있다.

조사 결과 범행 사실이 확인되면 해당 남학생의 신상을 유출해 인터넷상에서 퍼 나른 혐의(정보통신망 이용 촉진 및 정보보호 등에 관한 법률 위반)로 이들을 불구속 입건할 방침이다.

학교 측은 이번 사건이 알려지자 긴급 처장단 회의를 열어 가해 학생들의 징계 절차를 논의한 바 있으며 수사 결과와 별개로 징계 수위를 결정할 방침이다.

고대 의대 관계자는 "학교 측도 이번 사건과 관련해 당혹감을 감출 수 없고 국민들께 송구스럽다"며 "경찰이 구속 수사 방침을 밝힌 만큼 학교에서도 홈페이지에 따로 사과 입장을 낼 것"이라고 밝혔다.

이 관계자는 "사법처리 과정과 학교의 징계는 성격이 다르므로 시간 차가 생긴다"며 "학교 측 대응이 늦어지는 데 대해 불만이 있을 수 있지만 학칙에 따라 신속히 절차를 진행할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

고대의 학생 상벌 세칙에는 성폭력 사건으로 학교의 품위를 손상한 경우 해당 학과 부학장과 지도교수 등이 상벌위원회를 꾸려 징계 여부와 수위를 논의하고 총장에게 결과를 제의한다고 규정돼 있다.
