Indictments in football fixing scandal reach 57

Prosecutors yesterday said they indicted 46 current and former football players for alleged involvement in a widening K-League match-rigging scandal.

Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office said that a total of 57 people, including 11 brokers and financiers of bribes to players and the 46 former and current football players were indicted.

Though the investigation result was announced yesterday, prosecutors will keep the investigation open because they recently came upon leads on other players suspected to be involved in game manipulations.

Out of the 57, 18 were indicted and detained and 39 were indicted without detention.

Prosecutors are still trying to arrest six brokers or financiers.

According to the prosecutors, the 46 football players from six teams manipulated 15 matches held between June 2 and Oct. 27 in the 2010 season.

The players allegedly received from 3 million won ($2,820) to 31 million won per match, depending on the level of their involvement in the match-fixing.

The brokers targeted defenders and goalkeepers who can more easily manipulate games by allowing goals from opponents, prosecutors said.

The teams involved in the scandal are Daejeon Citizen FC, Chunnam Dragons FC, Sangju Phoenix FC, Busan Ipark FC, Incheon United FC, and Daegu FC.

As part of the investigation, the prosecutors’ office has given players a month to voluntarily come forward to admit to being involved in the match-fixing.

Twenty players turned themselves into the prosecutors’ office, including Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC goalkeeper Yeom Dong-kyun, 29, Busan Ipark FC defender Lee Sang-hong, 33, and Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC forward Choi Sung-kuk, 29.

“The players who received less than 10 million won and reported voluntarily to the prosecutors’ office were indicted without detention,” a prosecutor said.

According to an interim report released in June, two brokers made illegal profits of 620 million won by wagering 190 million won on the fixed games after distributing bribes of 220 million won to 10 players in three matches.

검찰 “6개구단 선수 46명 가담”

지난해 프로축구 K-리그의 15개 경기에서 6개 구단 선수 46명이 승부조작에 가담한 것으로 확인됐다. 창원지검 특수부는 승부조작 혐의(국민체육진흥법 위반·사기)로 프로축구 선수와 브로커 등 63명을 적발해 18명을 구속 기소하고 39명을 불구속 기소, 6명을 기소 중지했다고 7일 밝혔다. 이 중 적발된 선수는 모두 46명이다. 이들을 승부조작 당시 소속 구단별로 보면 광주 상무 15명, 전남 드래곤즈 9명, 대전 FC·대구 FC 각 7명, 인천 유나이티드 5명, 부산 아이파크 3명이었다.

　곽규홍 창원지검 차장검사는 “1000만원 이상 받은 선수를 구속하고 자수한 선수 21명은 불구속 기소했다”며 “승부조작 혐의로 인천 유나이티드, 경남 FC, 제주 유나이티드 3개 구단을 계속 수사하고 있다”고 말했다. 지난해 승부조작은 전국의 4개 조직이 주도해 조직폭력배와 전주(錢主)가 기획하고 전·현직 선수 출신 브로커가 학교와 구단의 후배를 포섭해 이뤄졌다. 전주와 브로커는 주로 2경기 연속 승패를 맞히는 스포츠토토(승부식)에 돈을 걸고 부당이득을 얻었다. 승부조작 경기는 2010년 6~10월에 열린 15개 경기였다. 이 중 3경기는 승부조작에 실패했다. 선수들은 경기 직전 브로커로부터 300만~8000만원을 승부조작 대가로 받았다.

　검찰에 따르면 최성국(28·수원)은 광주 상무 소속이던 지난해 6월 2일 성남전과 6월 6일 울산전에서 진행된 승부조작에 가담한 혐의로 불구속 기소됐다. 축구선수 출신 브로커 이모(31·전 전북)씨와 김모(31·전 대구)씨에게 넘어간 최성국이 승부조작을 위해 김동현(27·상무·구속) 등 동료를 끌어들였다는 게 검찰의 설명이다. 최성국은 검찰의 수사 결과 발표 후 소속팀 수원을 통해 “승부조작에 연루된 것에 대해 잘못을 깊이 뉘우치고 있다. 나를 응원해 주신 팬 분들에게 미안하다”고 고개를 숙였다. 이어 “성남전을 앞두고 400만원을 받았지만 경기가 1-1로 비겨 승부조작에 실패했고 곧바로 돈을 돌려줬다”고 해명했다. 수원에 따르면 최성국은 이후 심한 가책을 느끼고 승부조작에서 발을 빼기로 결심했다. 울산과의 경기에서 브로커를 통해 다시 한번 승부조작 제의가 들어왔지만 최성국이 거부했다는 것이다.

　올림픽 대표팀의 주장 홍정호(22)는 돈을 받았다가 돌려줬지만 아직 수사가 진행되고 있다. 홍정호는 승부조작에 관여했다는 소문이 돌자 지난 1일 프로연맹에 자진 신고한 뒤 3일과 4일 검찰 조사를 받았다. 홍정호는 “승부조작 제의를 받았지만 거부했고 받은 돈도 돌려줬다”고 주장하고 있다.

　앞서 구속 기소된 김동현은 주점 종업원(29·여·구속)을 동원해 전주 정모(29·구속)씨의 돈을 받아 선수들에게 나눠주고 대가로 8000만원을 챙기는 등 ‘몸통’ 역할을 했다. 그는 8개 경기의 승부조작에 관여했다. 그는 스포츠토토 복권을 구입해 배당금 4억원을 챙기기도 했다. 하지만 지난해 8월 상무-경남(1-1) 경기에서 승부조작에 실패하자 전주 정씨의 측근인 김모(29)씨로부터 협박을 당해 8000만원을 빼앗기기도 했다.
