North Korean defector-turned-filmmaker Jung Sung-san is set to wed after a 10-year courtship.

Jung, 42, is known for his involvement in hit films such as “Joint Security Area” (2000) and “Silmido” (2003) and later went on to produce a critically acclaimed musical about his experience in a North Korean labor camp.

He met his bride-to-be, Kim Gyeong-mi, 36, in 2001 when he was working at EBS as an adviser on programs about North Korea. When he first confessed his interest in Kim, she refused to go out with him. After he had pursued her for a year, she finally agreed to a date. The two are to marry on Sept. 23.

Jung defected from North Korea in 1995 after spending three months at Sariwon prison on charges that he had listened to South Korean radio. He escaped when the vehicle he was in overturned as he was being transferred. After his arrival here, he learned his father was executed by North Korea in 2003 for Jung’s activities.

Upon hearing of his father’s execution, he wrote a musical about his experiences in prison and his father’s death. The musical, “Yodok Story,” was presented in several countries, including the United States, Canada, and Germany, after its premiere in 2006,

Since his arrival in the South, Jung has advocated for improvements in human rights in the North through his art.

Having majored in film at Pyongyang University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts and Moscow State University, Jung joined Taeyoung Productions, a renowned but now defunct film production company, in the same year he defected from the North. After finishing his education, he began writing a movie that would later become “Joint Security Area,” which drew 583 million viewers and is still ranked the 7th highest-grossing Korean film of all time, according to the Korean Film Council.

He made his debut as a film director with “Ryanggangdo Children,” inspired by a question from a friend about whether he had Christmas while growing up in the North.

At the moment, however, he is preparing for his wedding.

“I appreciate that my fiancee’s parents have accepted me as a son-in-law, even though I don’t have family here and I’m from the North,” Jung said “I feel so sad about my father, who was executed for having me as a son, but I believe that he will bless me from heaven.”

Jung says he hopes to continue working to improve conditions for North Koreans and will become a role model for other defectors.

‘요덕스토리’ 감독 정성산씨 10년 열애 끝에 결혼

첫 눈에 ‘이 여자다’ 반해 6세 연하 신부와 23일 화촉

“여자친구의 혼수 비용까지 북한 인권 뮤지컬에 쏟아부으며 숨가쁘게 달려왔습니다. 하지만 10년 가까이 나만 바라보며 기다려온 사랑하는 그녀에게 더 이상 죄를 지을 수 없어 결혼합니다.”

　뮤지컬 ‘요덕스토리’와 영화 ‘량강도 아이들’의 감독인 탈북자 정성산(42·사진 왼쪽)씨의 청첩장에는 A4 용지 한 쪽 분량에 빼곡히 쓴 글이 함께 담겨 있다.

남한방송을 들었다는 이유로 북한 정치범수용소에서 온갖 고문에 시달리다 호송차가 뒤집히는 바람에 탈북한 사연과 1995년 1월 서울에 온 뒤 북한 민주화 운동에 매진했던 이야기들이 실렸다. 정 감독은 “저 때문에 북한에서 처형된 부모님의 한을 풀어드리지 못하고 장가를 간다는 게 사치같다”는 말도 했다.

　신부는 여섯 살 연하의 김경미(사진 오른쪽)씨. 10년 전 교육방송(EBS)에 출연하던 정 감독의 분장을 챙겨주던 메이크업 아티스트다. 정 감독은 “처음보는 순간 ‘이 여자다’ 하는 생각이 들었고 그냥 좋았다”며 “하지만 처음에는 날 좀 별로라고 생각하는 것 같아 혼자 속을 많이 태웠다”고 말했다.

두 사람이 가까워진 건 2002년 월드컵 때문이라고 한다. 서울광장과 잠실주경기장 등을 다니며 함께 응원을 했고 독일과의 4강전 때는 축구광인 신부를 위해 50만원으로 암표를 사서 관전을 하기도 했다.

결혼에 이르는 데 최대 복병은 신부 부모의 반대였다. 정 감독은 “감사하게도 그녀의 부모님이 저를 사위로 받아주셨다”며 “이제는 장모님이 맛있는 음식을 챙겨주실 정도”라고 활짝 웃어보였다.

　평양연극영화대를 나와 모스크바대에서 영화 연출을 전공한 정 감독은 한국에 온 뒤 동국대 연극영화과를 졸업하고 연출가의 길을 걷기 시작했다. 2000년 ‘공동경비구역 JSA’의 각본을 담당했고 2005년 영화 ‘빨간 천사들’로 데뷔했다. 이어 2006년에는 함경남도 요덕 정치범수용소의 열악한 인권 참상을 고발한 뮤지컬 ‘요덕스토리’의 총제작 감독을 맡았다. 이 뮤지컬은 해외에서도 공연됐다. 지난 4월 개봉한 영화 ‘량강도 아이들’도 정 감독의 작품이다.

　정 감독은 “2남4녀의 막내였던 제가 일가친척 하나 없이 결혼하려니 마음이 아프다”며 “하늘에 계시는 부모님과 형제들, 혹 살아계실지도 모르는 북한 친척들이 저를 축하해주실 것”이라고 말했다. 결혼식은 23일 오후 6시 서울 장충동 남산자유센터 웨딩홀에서 열린다.
