Mayor and school reformer marry

SACRAMENTO, California - Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and former Washington, D.C., schools chancellor Michelle Rhee were married over the weekend in a private ceremony in Tennessee.

The wedding came almost a year to the day after the couple’s originally scheduled wedding date. Johnson’s office announced Tuesday that the ceremony was held Saturday at Blackberry Farm near Knoxville.

“We had a small ceremony with an intimate group of family and friends and are thrilled to be starting our lives together,” Johnson said in a statement.

The former NBA star and the education reform advocate had planned to marry on Sept. 4, 2010, in a much larger ceremony in Sacramento, but they rescheduled the nuptials after a wave of intense public interest. Some of that interest centered on plans to hold an after-ceremony party and reception at the Sacramento-area home of Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, a developer with extensive land holdings in the region who has been a longtime supporter of Johnson.

Johnson and Rhee have been engaged since 2009.

Johnson, a Sacramento native, played 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association - most of that span with the Phoenix Suns - before returning home and working to revitalize the Oak Park neighborhood. Many of his efforts there were under the auspices of St. Hope, which helped launch a cultural center and charter school in the area.

Rhee served on the board of St. Hope Public Schools in 2006-2007, and the couple attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration together.

Rhee assumed the role as chancellor of D.C. schools in 2007, but resigned in October 2010 after the mayor who supported her lost his re-election bid. She was featured in the school reform documentary “Waiting for Superman” and founded the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group StudentsFirst.

A honeymoon was planned, but a spokesman said the mayor will not discuss details because he planned to surprise his new bride.

한국계 미국인 미셸 리(Michelle Rhee·42) 전 미국 워싱턴 교육감과 케빈 존슨(Kevin Johnson·45) 캘리포니아주 새크라멘토 시장이 1년 가까이 연기한 끝에 지난 주말 결혼식을 올렸다.

　새크라멘토 지역신문인 새크라멘토 비와 AP통신 등은 이들이 지난 3일 테네시주 녹스빌 외곽의 한 고급 호텔에서 백년가약을 맺었다고 6일(현지시간) 보도했다. 존슨 시장은 결혼식 뒤 언론사에 보낸 e-메일에서 “가족과 친구들만 초대해 조촐하게 결혼식을 올렸다”며 “축복해주신 모든 분께 감사드린다”고 밝혔다.

　결혼식에는 가까운 친척과 지인 등 40여 명만 참석했다. 리 전 교육감은 1년 전부터 점찍어둔 미국 유명 디자이너 모니크 륄리에의 웨딩드레스를 입고 식장에 섰다. 시장실 관계자는 “허니문이 예정돼 있지만, 존슨 시장이 신부를 놀라게 해주려고 이벤트를 준비 중이라 우리에게도 자세한 내용은 말해주지 않았다”고 전했다.

　두 사람은 존슨 시장이 지역사회 교육 개혁을 위해 설립한 비영리 단체 ‘세인트 호프’에 리 전 교육감이 2006년 자문위원으로 참여하면서 가까워진 것으로 알려졌으며, 2009년 약혼했다. 리 전 교육감은 이혼한 남편과의 사이에 두 딸을 두고 있고, 존슨 시장은 이번이 초혼이다. 존슨 시장은 1980년대 후반부터 90년대 후반까지 미 프로농구(NBA)에서 피닉스 선즈 소속의 포인트가드로 활약하기도 했다. 이들은 당초 지난해 9월 4일 결혼할 예정이었다.
