North and South’s symphonies to make music

A prominent South Korean conductor said Friday he has forged an agreement with Pyongyang artists to push for joint performances of the two Koreas’ symphony orchestras on a regular basis.

Chung Myung-whun, who leads the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and also serves as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, returned home Thursday after a four-day trip to North Korea aimed at promoting cultural exchanges and easing tensions. He was accompanied by two senior Seoul orchestra officials.

“We agreed to push for regular performances of a joint symphony orchestra of the two Koreas,” Chung told reporters.

The performances, if realized, will be alternately held in Seoul and Pyongyang, and the orchestra will be composed of the same number of players from each side, he said.

The 59-year-old maestro also said he agreed to run a program to cultivate young, up-and-coming North Korean musicians.

During his stay in Pyongyang, Chung conducted performances by the North’s State Symphony Orchestra and the Unhasu Orchestra, according to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency.

His trip comes amid lingering tensions over North Korea’s two deadly attacks on the South last year.

Seoul imposed sanctions on the North last year in retaliation for the sinking of a warship, which was blamed on the North. Still, South Korea has selectively approved trips to the North by its citizens and given humanitarian aid to the North.

South Koreans are not allowed to travel to North Korea without government approval.

나흘 동안 평양 다녀온 정명훈씨 “12월 남북 합동 교향악 연주 추진”

올 12월 남북한 합동 오케스트라의 베토벤 ‘합창’을 들을 수 있게 될까. 방북 후 돌아온 지휘자 정명훈(58·서울시향 예술감독)씨는 16일 “연말 공연에 대해 북측과 합의를 했고 아직까지 (정부 차원에서) 반대하는 소식은 못 들었다”고 말했다.

　12~15일 평양을 방문했던 정씨는 남한·북한 연주자가 같은 수로 참여하는 오케스트라를 구상하고 있다. 그는 이를 위해 북한국립교향악단의 공연을 관람했고, 은하수관현악단과 연습 시간을 따로 내 지휘도 했다. 베토벤 ‘합창’ 교향곡과 브람스·차이콥스키 등을 연습하는 데 7시간 넘게 걸렸다고 설명했다.

　정씨와 서울시향은 2006년 이후 12월마다 베토벤 ‘합창’ 교향곡을 연주하고 있다. 올해 서울시향의 ‘합창’ 공연은 12월 30일. 공연 1년 전 티켓이 매진될 정도로 인기다. 여기에 구상대로 북한 연주자가 함께 한다면 큰 화제가 될 것으로 보인다. 서울 공연에 이어 평양에서도 같은 프로그램을 연주하는 것이 정씨의 바람이다.

　장기적 계획은 남북 합동 오케스트라의 정기 연주다. 서울·평양에서 정례적으로 공연하는 것이다. 정씨는 “여덟 살에 미국으로 나가 50여 년 해외에서 살았다. 일평생 소원이 북한의 음악가를 만나는 것이었고, 이번 방북의 목적은 남북한의 젊은 음악가들을 서로 만나게 하는 것이었다. 계획대로 된다면 음악으로 하는 교류는 다른 분야에 비해 결과가 굉장히 좋을 것”이라고 말했다. 또 “북한 연주자·오케스트라가 정확하게 연주하고 기술적으로 수준이 높은 것만큼은 확실하다”고 평가했다.

　정씨의 목표는 크게 공연과 교육이다. 이번 방북에서 성악·현악·관악 등 음악가 7명의 개별 연주를 듣고 평가했다. 이렇게 북한의 젊고 유망한 음악가를 발굴해 키워주겠다는 계획을 가지고 있다.

　이번에 함께 방북했던 서울시향 김주호 대표이사는 “현재 계획은 모두 순수한 민간 차원의 교류다. 양측 정부가 승인하고 주변 분위기가 성숙될 경우 순조롭게 진행될 것”이라 내다봤다.
