Student warriors to finally get recognition

Five gray-haired Korean War veterans will receive official recognition from the military on Tuesday, 61 years after they entered the war and fought valiantly. They will finally be given serial numbers, which in the chaos of the war’s outbreak, they never got.

They were students in 1950, who rushed to take up arms to defend South Korea from the onslaught from the North. So great was the rush, they didn’t get serial numbers, guns, uniforms or provisions.

Their story was told in the 2010 film “Into the Fire,” in which the main characters were based on them and their friends. The film, which focused on the battles of Pohang and the Nakdong River, was seen by 3.56 million people.

“We have never forgotten the student soldiers’ sacrifices in Pohang,” Choi Yang-gyu, lieutenant major in the ROK 3rd Division said Friday. “It will be an honor for us to give the numbers to these great heroes.” It is the first time that the military has give serial number to any of the 23 student soldiers who survived the war.

The five veterans, Yoon Byeong-guk, Jeong Su-deuk, Joo Jeong-man, Jang Jin-myeong and Kim Man-gyu, will attend a military serial number conferment ceremony at a base of the ROK 3rd Division in Cherwon, Gangwon on Oct. 4, in celebration of the 63rd Korean Armed Forces Day that fell on Saturday.

In the first three months of the Korean War in 1950, most of South Korean territory was occupied by communist North Korean forces, and many students entered the war to save the country.

When South Korean forces were pushed down to Busan, the military put most of strength near the Nakdong River to await UN forces. The students soldiers were left behind in Pohang to block further penetration by North Korea. As the regular troops moved to the river, the North attacked Pohang, and 71 student soldiers fought them for 11 hours. Only 23 of them survived.

The battle came only three days after they joined the war.

Today, it is unclear how many beyond the five are still alive.

Though the story was admired and well known, the government never gave the survivors any compensation because they could not find any records that proved their participation. The veterans filed several petitions for recognition to the Blue House and Ministry of National Defense to no avail, until now.

Every Aug. 11, the five veterans get together at Seoul National Cemetery to commemorate their fellow soldiers’ sacrifices.

“We are trying to identify all the student soldiers who participated in the Pohang battle and we have found three more this year,” Yoon Byeong-guk, 80, said. “We won’t stop searching until we find our fellows to honor them.”

　이들은 6·25전쟁이 한창이던 1950년 8월, 학도병으로 자원 입대했다. 10대 중반의 어린 나이였다. 갑자기 소집된 터라 군복은 물론, 군번도 받지 못했다. 보병 제3사단(백골부대)에 소속된 학도병들은 전선 투입 사흘째인 8월 11일 경북 포항에서 북한 정규군인 766 유격대에 맨몸으로 맞섰다. 교복 차림의 이들은 사방에서 총알이 날아오는 긴박한 상황에도 “여기가 뚫리면 대한민국이 무너진다”는 절박함으로 11시간을 버텨냈다. 국군이 후퇴할 시간을 벌어준 것이다.

　당시 전투에 참가한 학도병 71명 중 23명만이 살아남았다. 그러나 정부는 61년이 지나도록 이들에게 아무런 훈장도 주지 않고 보상도 해주지 않았다. 참전 사실을 입증할 기록이 없다는 게 이유였다. 학도병들은 명예 회복을 위해 청와대·국방부 등에 탄원서를 내기도 했다. 그러나 “1953, 54년 당시 훈·포상 누락자가 없는지 재조사를 실시했다. 소급해서 포상할 수 없다”는 답만 돌아왔다.

　윤 회장 등 5명은 지난해 대한학도의병 동지회를 만들어 숨진 전우들의 넋을 기리고 있다. 현충일과 전투가 있었던 8월 11일이면 서울 동작구의 국립현충원에 모여 무명용사탑 앞에서 추모제를 연다. 지난 6월 현충일 추모제를 하던 중 한 군인이 찾아왔다. 보병 제3사단 인사참모 최양규 중령이었다. 최 중령은 “우리 군은 학도병을 잊지 않고 있다”며 “생존 학도병들에게 명예군번을 드리고 싶다”고 제안했다. 학도병에게 명예군번을 수여하는 건 처음 있는 일이다.

　윤 회장 등은 흔쾌히 수락했다. 사비를 털어 당시의 전투를 기념하는 동판을 만들기로 했다. 동판 가운데는 현충원의 무명용사탑을 그려 넣었고 왼쪽에는 전사자, 오른쪽에는 생환자의 이름과 출신학교를 새겼다. 명단의 아래쪽은 비워뒀다. 추가로 신원이 확인될 경우 이름을 새겨 넣기 위해서다. 윤 회장은 “올해에만 전사자 3명의 신원을 추가로 확인했다”며 “언젠가는 이 동판을 꽉 채우겠다”고 다짐했다.

　윤 회장 등은 국군의 날(10월 1일)을 맞아 오는 4일 경기도 철원의 제3사단 부대 내에서 군번 수여식을 한다. 후배 장병들이 도열한 가운데 군복을 입고 행진도 할 예정이다. 군복 명찰엔 ‘백골학도의병, 윤병국’이라고 이름도 새긴다. 3사단은 학도병들의 동판을 장병 교육자료로 사용한 뒤 현충원에 기증하기로 했다.
