Choi Si-won threatened over retweet

Choi Si-won

When Super Junior’s Choi Si-won put his two cents in about the Dokdo islets dispute, he probably had no idea that his welfare would be at stake.

On Aug. 10, Choi retweeted a post by the Blue House that read, “There is no doubt that Dokdo is our territory. We should defend it as if our lives depend on it.”

Cyzo Woman, a Japanese blog, reported on the matter, accusing Choi of being a “political entertainer” who had previously made fun of the Japanese pronunciation of “kimchi.”

“In our country we say ‘kimchi’ not ‘kimuchi,’?” Cyzo Woman quoted Choi as previously saying.

“It’s true that it’s a debated topic, but should he have made such a comment?” one Japanese netizen asked. Another said, “Let’s egg him during a fan meet.”

On Friday, some protesters did indeed turn up at a Super Junior fan meet in Yokohoma with eggs. Others attended with placards that read “Takashima,” referring to the name Japanese use for the islets.

A drama featuring actor Song Il-guk was also canceled in Japan after he swam to the Dokdo islets.
