Messi scores twice to close in on record
Barcelona on Sunday was a 4-0 winner against sixth-place Levante, as Lionel Messi scored two more goals.The Argentine is now three goals from the record of 85 in a calendar year established by German idol Gerd Mueller in 1972.
Barcelona has the best start in La Liga history, dropping just two points in the first 13 matches. They are three points ahead of Atletico Madrid, who earlier Sunday defeated Sevilla, 4-0, and 11 ahead of their traditional rivals Real Madrid, who crashed 1-0 on Saturday at Betis.
Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova was quick to reject the nation that the league is already won: “There is still a long way to go. There are still 75 points left to play for. Atletico Madrid is just three behind us, very close.”
