Kim Jae-joong, “WWW: Erasing Makeup”, Label: CJeS Entertainment, Genre: Ballad, Rock

Kim Jae-joong of the K-pop trio JYJ has repackaged his hit solo album from last year, “WWW,” adding two songs and retitling it “WWW: Erasing Makeup.” As you would expect from Jae-joong, these are mostly ballads infused with a bit of rock.

The album’s lead-off single “Heaven” is a slow-tempo duet, partnering Jae-joong with the female singer Gummy. Kim wrote the lyrics, taking inspiration from the Korean film “A Moment to Remember,” a tear-jerking melodrama about a man whose young wife is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The acoustic sound of the song goes well with the wintery atmosphere of the season.

The other new track on the album is “Makeover,” which captures the listener’s attention more with the vocalist’s frail tone rather than the melody. The song’s origin goes back to the 1970s when it was first sung by Japanese singer Nakajima Miyuki. Kim’s adaptation replaces the original’s bluesy ambience with a more understated tone, with only piano and strings.

The remaining 13 tracks are the same as the original release.
