Mnet features top 100 songs

The cable music channel Mnet has launched the “Legend 100 Songs” campaign, a look at 100 of the most important Korean songs over the past 50 years.

“We felt that someone had to trace the history of 20th-century Korean pop music,” said Mnet executive director Shin Hyung-gwan in a press conference yesterday.

The selection stretches from Lee Mi-ja’s 1964 song “Miss Dongbaek” to Psy’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012.

Singer Cho Yong-pil led the list with four songs, followed by Seo Taiji and Boys with three.

“Lee Mi-ja’s success enabled the Korean music business to operate within an industry scale, which is why the list starts from 1964,” said music critic Lim Jin-mo.

The “Legend 100 Songs” documentary program will air in two parts, tomorrow and on Feb. 11. Songs from the list will also be featured on this week and next week’s episodes of “M Countdown.”

The program is a follow-up to last year’s “Legend 100 Artists” project.
