Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice Chairman Euisun Chung’s “hydrogen economy” ambitions reached a major milestone Monday.

현대차그룹 정의선 부회장이 꿈꾸는 ‘수소 경제’가 월요일 이정표에 도달했다.

The automaker said it shipped 10 units of the Xcient Fuel Cell, the world’s first mass-produced heavy-duty trucks powered by hydrogen, to Switzerland on Monday with the goal of exporting 40 more by the end of this year.

현대차가 세계 최초로 양산한 ‘엑시언트 수소전기트럭(Xcient Fuel Cell)’ 10대를 선적해 스위스로 수출했다고 밝혔다. 현대차는 올해 말까지 40대를 추가로 수출한다는 계획이다.

Until now, trucks running on fuel-cell batteries have only existed as prototypes or concept cars.

지금까지 연료전지로 가는 트럭은 시제품이나 컨셉트 카 형태로만 존재했다.

“It was an opportunity for Hyundai Motor to show its global leadership in the fuel-cell electric commercial vehicle industry,” said Lee In-cheol, head of the automaker’s commercial vehicle division on Monday. “Hyundai Motor will take a lead role in shaping the industry of eco-friendly commercial vehicles not only in Europe but also in North America and China.”

Hydrogen economy is a new buzzword referring to a future in which hydrogen, a zero-emission energy source, is produced at a low cost and used for mobility, heating and other purposes.

수소경제는 최근 많이 회자되는 새로운 유행어가 되고 있다. 공해물질 배출이 없는 청정에너지 수소로 탈 것이나 연료 등을 적은 비용으로 생산하는 미래를 가리킨다.

Fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) run on electricity generated by hydrogen and oxygen inside a vehicle, using platinum as a catalyst, as opposed to existing electric vehicles, which use lithium-ion batteries to store electricity generated outside of the vehicle.

연료전지 자동차(FCEV)는 차량 내 수소와 산소가 만들어내는 전기로 달린다. 차량 바깥에서 만들어진 전기를 차 안에 저장하는 리튬이온 전지를 사용하는 전기차와 달리 백금을 촉매제로 사용한다.

Executive Vice Chairman Chung has been especially keen on developing hydrogen power, pledging to make 500,000 FCEVs, including both passenger cars and heavier trucks, by 2030. He is co-chair of an industry lobbying group called the Hydrogen Council, which counts more than 80 global companies as members.

정의선 부회장은 수소 에너지에 대해 높은 관심을 보여왔다. 2030년까지 승객을 실어 나르는 차량과 대형 트럭 등을 포함해 50만 대의 연료전지 자동차를 생산하겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. 그는 80여개 글로벌 기업들로 구성된 수소위원회(Hydrogen Council)의 공동의장이다.

The first batch of 10 Xcient Fuel Cells will be shipped to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, a joint venture established last year between Hyundai Motor and Switzerland-based company H2 Energy. The joint venture will convert the vehicles into refrigerated trucks to be used by food retailers.

이번에 선적한 엑시언트 수소전기트럭은 지난해 현대차와 스위스의 H2 에너지가 세운 합작회사 ‘현대 하이드로젠 모빌리티(HHM)’에 보내질 예정이다. 이 회사는 이 차량들을 음식 소매업자들을 위한 냉장 트럭으로 개조할 것이다.

The Xcient Fuel Cell is a 34-ton cargo truck powered by a 190-kilowatt hydrogen fuel-cell system. It can drive up to 400 kilometers (250 miles) on a single charge, which takes eight to 20 minutes to complete.

엑시언트 수소전기트럭은 34t 화물 트럭으로 수소 연료전지 시스템을 통해 190kW의 출력을 낸다. 한 번 충전으로 400km(250마일)을 달릴 수 있다. 한 번 충전에 걸리는 시간은 8~20분이다.

FCEVs have been looked to as a promising technology for vehicles thanks to their longer ranges and quicker charging times compared to lithium-ion batteries. But FCEVs are relatively expensive compared to lithium-ion battery cars. So commercialization of FCEVs has been slow.

연료 전지는 리튬이온 전지보다 장거리를 갈 수 있고 충전 시간이 짧아서 유망한 기술로 여겨져 왔다. 하지만 리튬이온 전지에 비해 비싼 가격 때문에 상업화가 지연돼 왔다.
