Deft remake of 'Josee' captures original, and then some

Local fans of “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish,” a 2003 Japanese romantic drama, might have been worried to hear there will be a Korean remake “Josee” — afraid that the effort would somehow botch the unconventional love story between Tsuneo and Josee.

2003년 개봉작인 일본 영화 “조제, 호랑이 그리고 물고기들”의 한국팬들은 이 영화가 한국 리메이크 버전으로 개봉한다는 소식에 걱정이 앞섰을지도 모른다. 색달랐던 츠네오와 조제의 사랑 이야기가 엉망이 될 수도 있다는 두려움 때문이다

The characters were so beloved and their tale so unique, it would have been easy to get it wrong.

각각의 인물은 너무 사랑을 많이 받았고, 그들의 이야기는 특별했다. 그렇기 때문에 뭔가가 잘못될지 모른다는 생각을 하기 쉬웠던 것이다.

But by remaining true to the original and tweaking it a bit for the passage of time and to fit better with the Korean setting, the remake seemed to do justice to the source material and may have taken it to a new level.

do justice: 충분히 발휘하다, 제대로 다루다.

하지만 원작에 충실하면서도 시간의 흐름에 따른 변화를 살짝 주면서 한국의 실정에 맞도록 바꾸었더니 리메이크 버전 또한 원작을 해치지 않았으며, 어떻게 보면 또 다른 새로운 느낌까지 더해준다.

“I was already anticipating how Josee will be painted in director Kim Jong-kwan’s perspective and how he would bring up the colors of the original film when he asked me [to feature as Josee],” Han Ji-min, who portrayed Josee, said in an online interview on Friday.

“김종관 감독의 방향성에 따라 어떻게 조제가 그려질지, 그가 나에게 조제 역할을 해달라고 했을 때 원작의 어떤 느낌을 더 돋보이게 할 것인지에 대한 기대감이 이미 나에겐 컸다”고 조제 역할을 맡은 한지민이 지난 금요일에 진행된 인터뷰에서 말했다.

“There were some differentiations of the character itself, and I felt that there were lots of parts where I could newly build up — so when I started to film ‘Josee,’ I felt more thrilled than pressured.”

differentiation: 구별, 다름

pressured: 부담스럽다, 압박 받다.

“등장인물별로 좀 달라지는 것들이 있었고, 내가 새롭게 만들어나갈 부분이 많다는 걸 느꼈다. 그리고 조제 촬영을 시작했을 때, 부담스럽기보다는 가슴이 뛴다는 느낌을 받았다.”

The characters, the seasonal setting and the central theme remain similar, but parts of stories have been changed to match the current era and local sentiments. One of the differences was that Han’s character was even more secluded and less expressive than the original film.

등장인물과 계절적 배경, 그리고 중심이 되는 주제는 비슷하게 유지되었지만 현재 시대와 국내 정서에 맞추기 위해 바뀐 부분도 있다. 하나 다른 부분이 있다면, 한씨가 연기하는 인물이 원작보다도 더 내성적이고, 표현을 잘 하지 않는 성격이라는 것이다.
