Debris Found in North Carolina Came From SpaceX Dragon, NASA Says

A hunk of metal found on a remote trail in a luxury camping resort in North Carolina came from a SpaceX Dragon capsule, NASA said, confirming that the mystery object was yet another piece of space junk that has recently landed on Earth.

The debris came from the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft that had reentered Earth’s atmosphere after traveling to the International Space Station, NASA said in an emailed statement. “NASA is unaware of any structural damage or injuries resulting from these findings,” the space agency said.

The North Carolina object was found in the mountains about 23 miles west of Asheville, North Carolina, at a resort called the Glamping Collective. The private property has about 5 miles of private hiking trails, and its guests stay in geodesic domes and cabins.

Matt Bare, a founder of the Glamping Collective, said about 8 acres of the 160-acre property have been developed, and the object happened to land on one of the hiking trails. “It could have been just about anywhere else on the property and no one would have ever seen it,” he said.

A member of the resort’s landscaping crew found the debris May 22 while doing routine trail maintenance. Bare estimated that the object weighed about 100 pounds and was about 4 feet by 4 feet in size. He said that they quickly realized that the object had to have come from the sky because of its size and the remote location where it was found.

The space junk is now on display for guests to view at the resort. Bare said that employees had not heard from NASA or SpaceX.

The debris came from the trunk of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, NASA said. The Dragon spacecraft has two sections: a pressurized one that can carry people or cargo, and a depressurized section, the trunk, which has hardware used for spacecraft power and cooling while in orbit. The trunk remains attached to the Dragon until shortly before reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, when it is jettisoned and breaks up.

SpaceX did not respond to requests for comment.

우주 잔해는 스페이스X 드래곤 비행체가 국제우주정거장(ISS)으로의 비행을 마치고 지구 대기권으로 재진입할 때 떨어진 것이라고 NASA는 이메일 성명에서 밝혔다. “이번 물체 추락으로 (건물의) 구조적인 피해나 (사람의) 부상은 없는 것으로 파악하고 있다”고 NASA는 덧붙였다.

글램핑 컬렉티브의 창업자 맷 배어는 160 에이커(약 64만7500 제곱미터)에 달하는 전체 부지 중 8 에이커(약 3만2000 제곱미터)만 개발된 상태며, 우주 쓰레기는 개발된 하이킹 등산로 중 한 곳에 떨어졌다고 말했다. “이곳 말고 (개발되지 않은) 다른 곳에 떨어졌다면 아마 발견하지 못했을 것”이라고 그는 덧붙였다.

리조트의 조경 관리 직원 중 한 명은 지난 5월22일 평소대로 등산로의 조경 관리를 하다가 이 우주 쓰레기 덩어리를 발견했다. 배어 사장에 따르면 이 물체는 무게가 약 100 파운드( 45kg 정도)며, 가로 세로 크기는 약 4X4 피트( 가로 세로 약 1.2m) 정도다. 그는 물체가 인적이 없는 외진 곳에서 발견된 점, 크기가 큰 점으로 미루어 우주에서 떨어졌다는 사실을 매우 빠르게 알아챘다고 말했다.

우주 쓰레기는 현재 리조트에 손님들이 볼 수 있도록 그대로 전시돼 있다. 배어 사장은 직원들이 NASA나 스페이스X 측으로부터 아무런 연락을 받지 못했다고 말했다.

NASA는 이 잔해가 스페이스X 드래곤의 몸통에서 떨어져 나온 것이라고 밝혔다. 드래곤 비행체는 두 부분으로 이루어져 있는데 가압된 부분은 사람이나 화물을 실어 나르며, 가압되지 않은 부분인 몸통은 비행체가 날 수 있는 힘을 내는 하드웨어가 실려 있고, 지구 궤도를 돌 때 드래곤을 식혀주는 역할을 한다. 스페이스X 드래곤은 대기권에 재진입하기 직전 몸통이 분리돼 본체에서 떨어진다.

스페이스X 측은 이번 사안에 대해 입장을 밝히지 않았다.
