Time to get real (KOR)

The ruling Democratic Party (DP)’s crushing defeat in the April 7 mayoral by-elections in Seoul and Busan can be attributed to the DP’s endless fumbles in real estate policy and its unrivaled double standards. The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) did not grab an election victory on its own. Even so, the PPP seems to be oblivious to the real reason for its landslide victory. Voters simply gave the party a chance to put the brakes on the DP’s overbearing governance. And yet, members of the PPP are engrossed with an internal battle to take the helm of the embattled party only three weeks after the victory in the two largest cities in Korea after suffering sweeping losses in nationwide elections for years.

Former and current members of the PPP have not missed a single chance to exchange attacks on one another. Its former interim leader Kim Chong-in hurls insults at both the PPP and Ahn Cheol-soo, head of the People’s Party, an ally of the PPP, on a daily basis. After Ahn described the PPP’s victory in the Seoul mayoral by-election as a “triumph for the opposition camp,” Kim denounced Ahn for being “arrogant.” Kim went on to criticize the PPP for being in a “hellish state.” He even criticized floor leader Joo Ho-young, who also serves as ad hoc leader of the PPP, for “having attempted to nominate Ahn as Seoul mayoral candidate behind the scenes.”

Despite rebuttals and expression of disgruntlement at Kim by few members, the PPP fell short of reacting to Kim’s fiery words due to a pitiful leadership vacuum ahead of an upcoming national convention on April 30. About 15 members of the PPP have rolled up their sleeves to run for the chairmanship of the party.

In the meantime, most PPP lawmakers based in North and South Gyeongsang provinces are only concerned with who will help them get a nomination for their legislative seats in the next parliamentary election. As a result, the party did not show any reaction to Kim’s strong opposition to bringing in former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl, a frontrunner in polls, to brace for the presidential election next March.

Some PPP members offered to recruit Yoon based on their personal connections, but the party does not know what to do to reel him in. Even before the elections, the PPP promised to merge with Ahn’s party, but no progress has been made. After Rep. Suh Byung-soo, a core member of the pro-Park Geun-hye faction, made remarks suggestive of his denial of the presidential impeachment, that provoked strong opposition from inside and outside the party.

Many voters are turning their backs against the PPP. Voters cast ballots for the PPP because of their animosity for President Moon Jae-in and the DP. The PPP should reinvent itself — fast!

선거 20일만에 자중지란 빠진 국민의힘

4ㆍ7 재ㆍ보선에서 여당 참패의 원인으로는 단연 부동산과 내로남불이 꼽힌다. 정치에 대해 아는 사람들이라면 ‘야당의 압승’을 입에 올리지 않는다. 야당인 국민의힘이 잘해서 표를 얻은 게 아니라 국민이 정부와 집권당에 대해 준엄한 심판을 했다는 게 전문가들의 공통된 진단이다. 그런데 국민의 힘만 이런 상황을 모르는 걸까. 여권의 오만과 독주를 막고 민생을 살리라며 국민이 기회를 준 것임에도 불구하고 자신들이 잘해 이긴 듯 당내 권력을 두고 이전투구를 하고 있다. 수년간 전국 단위 선거에서 연패하다 이제 겨우 1승을 올린 지 20일만에 자중지란에 빠진 국민의힘에 비판이 쏟아지고 있다.

4ㆍ7 선거 이후 국민의힘은 하루도 조용할 날이 없었다. 김종인 비상대책위원회 체제가 끝나고 무주공산이 된 상황에서 당권과 전직 대통령 사면 등과 관련해 당내 이견이 계속 불거지고 있다. 지난 8일 직을 내려놓은 김종인 전 위원장은 연일 국민의힘에 독설을 퍼부었다. 그는 중진들이 당권을 놓고 고성을 지른데 대해 "향후 두 달은 저 모양일 것”이라고 비판했다. 직전까지 당을 이끌며 선거 승리의 경험을 함께 한 인사가 뼈아픈 말을 쏟아내고 있는 것이다.

국민의힘은 당 차원에서 어떤 대응도 못하고 있다. 전당대회를 앞두고 당 전체가 리더십 공백에 빠졌기 때문이다. 원내 10여명, 원외 3~4명 등 15명 가랑의 인사가 당 대표 선거에 출마할 것으로 예상되는 만큼 당내 권력투쟁만 활발할 뿐이다. 대다수를 차지하는 영남 지역 의원들은 눈앞에 닥쳐온 대선 보다는 다음 총선에서 어떤 당 대표가 자신의 공천에 유리할 지만 고민하고 있다. 수도권 의원들을 중심으로 당 지도부가 영남으로 채워지는 데 대한 우려가 나온다. 이에 대해 불편한 기색을 드러내는 목소리도 있어 이래저래 국민의 마음은 편하지 않다. 원내대표 선거에 출마한 울산 출신 김기현 의원은 "우리의 주요 지지층이 영남에 많이 계신데 영남이 무슨 죄를 지었나"라고 말했다. 이러니 김종인 전 위원장이 "국민의힘에는 절대 안 간다"고 말하는 것 아닌가.

이런 와중에 ‘원조 친박’ 서병수 의원은 전직 대통령 사면을 요구하며 박근혜 전 대통령의 탄핵을 부정하는 발언을 해 당 안팎의 반발을 불렀다. 대다수 국민은 박 전 대통령의 국정농단과 탄핵에서 큰 상처를 입었고 아직 그 상처는 다 아물지 않았다. 그런 국민을 어루만지기는 커녕 또다른 불씨를 키우는 행태는 바람직하지 않다.

국민의힘의 이런 모습에 많은 유권자들이 등을 돌리고 있다. 이들은 “역시 국민의힘은 변화를 기대하기 어렵다. ‘도로 한국당’이 됐다"고 비판한다. 4.7 선거가 던지는 민의도 모른 채 당내 권력 투쟁에만 골몰하며 국민의 정서와는 동떨어진 행태를 지속하는 한 국민의힘에 미래는 없다.
