SSG.com answers dawn delivery with product 'curation'

As the retail price war rages, SSG.com is competing in the cut-throat market a different way.

It is combining speed, quality and the best-of-the-best products, putting its own spin on dawn delivery.

Emart’s SSG.com said Monday it will deliver more than 400 items from SSG Food Market, which specializes in high-end groceries, such as fresh produce, teas, meat and seafood.

Products for dawn delivery include high-end Korean beef, 30 types of side dishes and 200 kinds of processed food.

Orders placed before midnight will be delivered by 6 a.m. to Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province.

Last year, SSG.com started making available premium fresh produce sold at Shinsegae Department Store.

Its goal is to become “a premium lifestyle mall,” said SSG.com, adding that it will provide a product “curation service” based on different lifestyles of different customers.

“SSG.com plans to expand products delivered from SSG Food Market to more than a thousand in the near future and offer SSG.com’s premium lifestyle curation service,” said a spokesperson for SSG.com in a statement.

Since Coupang went public on the New York Stock Exchange, Emart, Lotte Mart and Market Kurly promised to offer the lowest price in the market. Emart offered a price guarantee, while Market Kurly is offering some of its products for just 100 won ($0.9).

Coupang is offering free delivery to users who are not paid members.
