BTS lost to Haim, a three-sister act from Los Angeles, for Best International Group at the BRIT Awards, held on May 11 at London's O2 arena.
According to reports, some 4,000 people attended, making it the largest such event in London since the pandemic started.
BTS was the first Korean group to be nominated for the award. Others up for Best International Group included Fontaines D.C., Foo Fighters and Run the Jewels.
Fans of the boy band griped via social media posts about the loss, saying that the band had been nominated just to generate views.
Korea's Ambiguous Dance Company made a surprise remote appearance at awards.
British rock band Coldplay opened the event with a performance of "Higher Power" while the dance company, known for its unique choreography, appeared next to them dancing as holographic projections.
Ambiguous Dance Company was featured last year in a set of tourism promotional videos with Korean band Leenalchi. The videos, released by the Korea Tourism Organization, racked up more than 1 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.
