Unattractive squabble (KOR)

Even after holding a closed-door meeting over whether to postpone the ruling Democratic Party (DP)’s race to elect its next presidential candidate, members of the Supreme Council were unable to reach a conclusion Tuesday. That followed an earlier failure by the same council on June 13. A DP spokesperson said the party decided to make a final conclusion after the council on Friday receives a plan on presidential campaigns from its election preparation committee. However, given a tense standoff between those who want to delay the date for picking the presidential candidate and those who want to keep the schedule as stipulated by the party constitution — 180 days before a presidential election — the wrangling over the timeline is not expected to subside easily.

In Tuesday’s Supreme Council meeting, Reps. Kim Yong-min and Back Hye-ryun — who are close to Gyeonggi Gov. Lee Jae-myung, a frontrunner in polls — opposed a delay while Reps. Kang Byung-won and Kim Young-bae, who are loyalists of President Moon Jae-in, supported the postponement, citing a need to reconsider the date. Among presidential hopefuls in the DP, Governor Lee, Rep. Park Yong-jin and former Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae oppose a delay, while former DP Chairman Lee Nak-yon, former Prime Minister Chung Sye-gyun and Rep. Lee Kwang-jae demand it. The disharmony reflects a sharp clash between the pro-Lee faction and the anti-Lee faction in the ruling party.

The pro-Lee group insists that the party cannot change the schedule, as there is no justification for the shift. But opponents desire to delay it by changing party rules so that the political event can be held briskly after the country overcomes the pandemic through aggressive vaccinations. Put simply, the pro-Lee group wants to hold the race while Lee enjoys a comfortable lead over other contenders. The anti-Lee group wants to buy time for their hopefuls to raise their popularity.

A war of nerves over fixing timetables for party races is nothing new. But the general public does not like it as the ruling party seems to be mired in an internal fight for power even after its crushing defeat in the April 7 mayoral by-elections in Seoul and Busan. The real estate measures the DP has churned out fell way short of the people’s expectations. Despite simmering public rage over former Justice Minister Cho Kuk’s double standards and hypocrisy, the radical Pro-Moon group in the DP still takes an overbearing stance on a myriad of issues. In the meantime, the opposition People Power Party (PPP) reshaped its old school image by electing a 36-year-old political rookie as its new leader. The DP must end all the confusion and conflict before it’s too late.

경선 일정 집안싸움 민주당, 국민 보기 민망하다

더불어민주당이 그제 당 최고위원회를 비공개로 열어 대선 경선 연기 여부를 논의했으나 또 결론에 이르지 못했다. 같은 문제를 의논한 지난 13일 비공개 최고위에서 결정하지 못한 데 이어 두 번째다. 고용진 수석대변인은 회의 직후 “현행 당헌에 규정된 ‘180일 전 선출’을 기본으로 해서 대선경선기획단이 선거 일정을 포함한 기획안을 25일 최고위에 보고하고, 그 보고를 받은 뒤 최종 결론을 내기로 했다”고 밝혔다. 그러나 경선 연기와 연기 불가를 주장하는 후보들이 한 치의 양보 없이 대치하는 양상이어서 경선 일정을 둘러싼 논란은 쉽게 가라앉지 않을 전망이다.

이날 최고위 회의에서 민주당 내 대선 후보들 중 여론조사 1위를 달리고 있는 이재명 경기지사와 가까운 김용민ㆍ백혜련 최고위원 등이 경선 연기 불가 입장을 냈다. 친문 성향의 강병원ㆍ김영배 최고위원 등은 “경선 연기론에 타당성이 있으니 검토하자”고 맞섰다. 현재 민주당 내 대선 후보들 중 이 지사와 박용진 의원, 추미애 전 법무부 장관 등은 연기 불가 입장이다. 반면 이낙연 전 대표와 정세균 전 총리, 이광재 의원 등은 경선 연기와 당무위 개최를 요구하고 있다. 큰 틀에서 이재명계와 비이재명계가 충돌하는 모양새다.

이 지사 측은 경선을 연기할 ‘상당한 사유’가 없음에도 불구하고 원칙을 바꿔 경선을 연기해서는 안 된다는 입장이다. 비이재명계 인사들은 코로나19 극복 이후 정상적인 경선을 통해 흥행을 도모하자고 주장한다. 원칙을 따진다면 이 지사 측에 명분이 더 있어 보이지만 경선은 참여하는 후보들의 합의가 중요한 만큼 경선 연기론에도 일정 정도 귀를 기울일 필요가 있다. 하지만 여론조사에서 우위를 차지하는 이 지사는 시간을 끌 경우 탄력을 잃을 수 있다는 점을 걱정해 '원칙대로'를 고수한다. 반면 다른 후보들은 자신들의 지지율을 끌어올릴 시간이 필요한 만큼 경선 연기 입장을 굽히지 않고 있다.

대선 국면에서 후보들의 경선룰을 둘러싼 신경전은 늘 있는 일이지만 현재의 민주당을 바라보는 국민의 시선은 곱지 않다. 4ㆍ7 재ㆍ보선에서 참패한 뒤 두 달이 넘도록 민심을 다독이거나 혁신하려는 노력은 뒷전인 채 내부 권력다툼에만 매몰되는 것처럼 보인다. 선거 이후 민주당은 반성과 혁신을 되뇌었지만 최근 내놓은 각종 세제 개편안이나 정책은 국민의 호응을 얻지 못하고 있다. 조국 전 법무부 장관류의 위선과 오만을 버리라는 국민의 명령은 이미 잊은 듯 강성 친문 세력의 목소리는 여전히 거세다. 그 사이 국민의힘은 36세의 이준석을 대표로 선출하며 개혁적 이미지를 끌어 올렸다.

지금이라도 민주당 지도부는 리더십을 발휘해 경선 일정을 둘러싼 혼란과 충돌을 마무리지어야 한다. 민생보다는 집안싸움에 열중하는 민주당에 실망하는 국민이 더 늘어나기 전에 말이다.
