Merck, a Darmstadt, Germany-based science and technology company, started the mass production of hole transport materials (HTM), a compound used in the production of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, at its new production facility in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi.

The material will be supplied to LG Display, one of Merck’s key clients in Korea, the company announced on Thursday.

The display maker will apply the compound to  layers of plastic OLED panels for smartphones. It is designed to optimally maintain the transport of electrons and block electron holes.

“Korea is leading the global OLED market. Merck is investing substantial resources required to enable Korean panel makers to lead the OLED market,” said Kim Woo-kyu, Managing Director of Merck Korea.

Merck invested 25 billion won to establish a new OLED materials manufacturing facility at the Poseung National Industrial Complex last year.
