LG Energy Solution is making an effort to provide its customers with sustainable energy solutions in consideration of its environmental, social and governance (ESG) structure in all business activities.

Accordingly, the company continues practicing sustainability management in terms of green energy, battery reuse and recycling, and responsible management of the supply chain.

In response to climate change, LG Energy Solution is actively promoting the introduction of renewable energy to reduce energy consumption in the battery production process and to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

The company’s Polish plant has been using 100 percent renewable energy for its operation since 2019 and the same has applied to the U.S. plant since July 2020. Plants in Korea and China are keeping up with this trend as well.

In particular, the Ochang Plant in North Chungcheong participated in the green premium tariff, which was first implemented in Korea last year, and won a bid for renewable energy with an annual capacity of 61GWh.

LG Energy Solution spelled out a commitment to eco-friendliness by signing up for both EV100 and RE100 for the first time in the industry in April last year.

It aims to convert 100 percent of vehicles weighing 3.5 tons or less and 50 percent of vehicles weighing between 3.5 and 7.5 tons vehicles into eco-friendly models by 2030.

By signing up for EV100, LG Energy Solution aims to hand over a well-preserved environment to the next generation.

Moreover, the company has made an appearance in the RE100 reporting process that is managed by the Carbon Disclosure Project.

RE100, which targets companies with annual power consumption of more than 100GWh or companies with global status such as Fortune 1,000 companies, publishes a report annually to joining companies.

According to RE100 Annual Report 2020, LG Energy Solution ranks first in Korea with 33 percent of the result of conversion.

In addition, the company devotes all its energy to the research of waste batteries in accordance with the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market.

“The battery discharged after being used in electric vehicles can be reused depending on the remaining life and condition of the battery. We are securing technology along with reviewing our investment to efficiently utilize a waste battery,” an official at LG Energy Solution said.

Based on more than 30 years of battery and ESS research and development, the company is expected to take the lead in the battery reuse market through cooperation with several automakers.

Furthermore, it is establishing a virtuous cycle system in which the metal necessary for manufacturing the battery is extracted and reused when the battery is no longer usable.

LG Energy Solution established a policy containing the philosophy of responsible raw material supply as the company is also making efforts to construct a clean and transparent supply chain considering the environment, human rights and anti-corruption.
