The power of ribbons (KOR)

Actor Youn Yuh-jung, 75, presented the Best Supporting Actor award at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27. She was wearing something blue on her left shoulder that looked like a badge.

It was a ribbon that said #WithRefugees. American actor Jamie Lee Curtis wore the ribbon on her left ring finger. The ribbons were provided by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (Unchr) to show support and solidarity for Ukraine which was invaded by Russia.

According to the Unhcr, approximately 3.8 million Ukrainian refugees crossed the border. The blue represents the United Nations and is also a color on the flag of Ukraine. The blue ribbons on the dresses and suits of the actors attending the Academy Awards shined brighter than any jewelry.

Ribbons began to be used for social campaigns in the United States in the 1970s. In 1973, American pop music group Tony Orlando and Dawn released a song titled “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Ole Oak Tree.” The song is about someone returning after serving a three-year term in prison and asking his love to tie a yellow ribbon around the “ole oak tree” in front of her house if she still loves him. The song was immensely successful as it coincided with the return of the prisoners of the Vietnam War.

In 1979, American diplomats were detained in Iran. It was reported on the news that a wife of one of the diplomats in the United States tied a yellow ribbon on an oak tree in front of their house. The husband was released after two years, and the couple untied the yellow ribbon together. In the wake of the Sewol Ferry sinking on April 16, 2014, Koreans joined the yellow ribbon campaign wishing for the safe return of the missing passengers, mostly high school students on a field trip to Jeju Island from Incheon.

Pink ribbons are the symbol of breast cancer awareness. In 1992, philanthropist Evelyn Lauder famously started a campaign distributing 1.5 million breast cancer self-test kits with pink ribbons. Evelyn, daughter-in-law of Estée Lauder, was a breast cancer survivor.

Ribbons are made with a soft material but can be powerful weapons. One ribbon is enough to fight against wars and diseases.

지난달 27일(현지시각) 제94회 아카데미 시상식에 남우조연상 시상자로 등장한 배우 윤여정. 그의 왼쪽 어깨에 달린 푸르스름한 무언가가 얼핏 ‘훈장’처럼 비쳤다. #WithRefugees(난민과 함께)라는 문구가 적힌 리본이었다. 미국 배우 제이미 리 커티스는 이 리본을 왼손 약지에 달아서 ‘반지’처럼 연출했다. 유엔난민기구(UNHCR)가 제공한 리본으로, 러시아 침공을 받은 우크라이나에 대한 지지와 연대의 마음을 표현한 것이다.

UNHCR에 따르면 지금까지 국경을 넘은 우크라이나 피란민은 약 380만 명으로 추산된다. 파란색은 유엔을 상징하면서 우크라이나 국기를 구성하는 색깔이기도 하다. 이날 아카데미 시상식에 참석한 배우들의 드레스와 수트에 달린 파란 리본은 그 어떤 보석보다도 반짝였다.

리본이 사회적 캠페인의 소재로 쓰이기 시작한 것은 1970년대 미국에서부터다. 1973년 미국의 팝 뮤직 그룹인 토니 올란도&돈(Tony Orlando&Dawn)이 ‘노란 리본을 묶어주오(Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree)’란 노래를 발표한다. 3년의 형기를 마친 재소자가 연인에게 ‘아직도 당신이 날 사랑하고 있다면 오래된 떡갈나무에 노란 리본을 달아 놓으라’는 내용이다. 당시 월남전 포로들의 귀환과 맞물려 이 노래는 크게 성공을 거둔다.

그리고 1979년 이란에서 미국 외교관들이 억류되는 사건이 발생한다. 이때 미국에 남아있던 한 외교관의 아내가 노란 리본을 집 앞 떡갈나무에 달아 놓은 장면이 매스컴을 탔다. 남편은 다행히 2년 뒤 억류에서 풀려났고, 부부는 나무에 묶여있던 노란 리본을 함께 풀었다. 2014년 4월 16일 세월호 침몰사고가 발생했을 때 실종자들의 무사 귀환을 염원하는 리본 캠페인의 색깔이 ‘노란색’이 된 배경이다.

‘핑크 리본’은 유방암에 대한 예방 의식을 높이기 위한 상징으로 알려져 있다. 에블린 로더 여사가 1992년 150만 개의 유방암 자가진단키트와 함께 핑크 리본을 나눠준 캠페인이 가장 유명하다. 화장품 회사인 ‘에스티 로더’ 창업주의 맏며느리였던 그는 유방암 생존자였다.

리본은 연약한 소재로 만들어지지만 강력한 무기가 될 수 있다. 전쟁과 질병에 맞서 싸우기 위한 ‘전투복’은 리본 한 벌이면 충분하다.
